I went back after a half hour of gaming and bought both the starter pack and battle pack on steam. Call it impulsive, but what the heck. When I started this game it brought back some things I didn't realize I missed until now. It's an MMORPG without all the mess. Step on the lift, get a party, go have fun. I like the Zelda-esque feel that I get from the dungeon floors. I've been having a blast. When I get some more free time I want to check out the PvP aspect of things, but I'm still trying to figure out the basics a bit.

I Understand what to me seems very little of this game. You go down the elevator, clear floors, grab minerals and gain heat and crowns. Cash in minerals for crowns, buy better gear, rinse, repeat?
I'm still trying to figure out the dynamics of gate progression. So far I've just jumped on a lift and ran with it. Little did I know yesterday that each gate is different. I know there's an underlying goal here, I just can't quite wrap my head around it. On top of that, all this talk about knights and gunslingers has also got me a bit confused. I just go hit stuff with my shovel and make it dead. Worked so far... but I know I'm missing out on something here.

I guess I've gotten so used to traditional games that I feel kind of lost here. The scenery change is nice. I can finally feel relaxed. How can you stress about a game that looks like this :). My friends say I'm playing a kids game. I told them to shove it. I thought I'd pop in here, express my plight, and maybe make a few friends out it. Friends are good, as is information on how these clockworks function, and what exactly is happening to my character.

I have just started yesterday

I have just started yesterday too and I too considered buying a battle pack but I'm holding it off for now. :P

I looked at the wikipedia page for this game and it seems that this is similar to Diablo and right now, we just improve our characters to max. By buying packs, you really accelerate that progression. Then that's about it. Hopefully, the devs will add an actual endgame or something like that.

Word of caution - I'm a newbie so feel free to add or correct me. Thanks :)

Spend some time roaming the

Spend some time roaming the wiki--that will explain your questions. The motivation behind the minerals is that the bins where you deposit them for crowns in the arcade are all dormant gates, and the final composition of a gate (types of levels/types of enemies) is determined by the amount/combination of minerals that players deposit in that particular gate--minus boss strata, which are predetermined. In that sense, players can customize the types and combinations of levels that appear, though it takes such large amounts of minerals to change the theme of a strata that it is difficult to do without a group effort.
As far as characters and equipment: yes, you basically strive to get all of your equipment to 5*, and each piece of equipment needs a certain amount of heat in order to craft it up to the next * level (in addition, you also need to buy a recipe for the equipment you are trying to make, but that's another matter). Again, the variety of equipment (weapons, armor, trinkets, etc.) makes the games highly customizable to your play style. There are no hard and fast character classes, but players generally gravitate toward their preferred weapons as a way of describing their characters--swordsman, bomber, gunslinger.
@forseygr, the current "endgame" is beating Lord Vanaduke at the end of tier 3 and reaching the planet's core. Like the other bosses, however, Vana only appears in the strata of some of the gates, so you can actually reach the core without ever facing him. The devs tease eventually opening the core, leading to a 4th tier (or something), but until that happens Vana is what most players consider endgame.
