That would be awesome. Three bases, one grim totem, players sneak it around to block off passages. Plus, it buff's guadians skills, becuase it brings back a bit of that sheild-use pve play, and you need a guy guarding you so you don't drop the totem each time someone chops you.
Not sure exactaly how the zombies would work. They would be neuteral to all types of weapons for sure. Prehaps you charge the totem like a bomb to change it's team allignment, then place it to unleash hell within it's radius? I posted this on the spot, so to speak, so there are probabaly plenty of ways to improve and tweak this.

I just figured that if you had to carry something across the map, there would be a reason to stay with the guardians.

UT had a bombing run mode
UT had a bombing run mode that was incredibly fun. Shouldn't be all that hard to implement something similar using a liftable object.
