WoW for example. Our servers are expected to go up in 2 hours. 30 Minutes before the scheduled time, delayed for two hours. 30 Minutes before the scheduled time, delayed for another two hours. Delayed, delayed, and delayed again, going from a couple hour maintenance to a several hour maintenance.
It's painful.

Five hours later...
"Maintenance has been extended. Expect another two hours."
Two hours later...
"Maintenance has been extended again. Expect another hour."
One hour later...
"Maintenance has been extended eight hours."
Eight hours later...
"Maintenance has been concluded."
Server crashes after a half hour and stays down with no news for another four hours.
I WISH I was kidding. Three rings is actually good at this.

Having updates on the page is still the way to go, I don't know why they don't do it like that. I'd also love a heads up that the game is still not up before trying to log on, and for that matter, to have an indicator of when the update is done.
It's not really too much to ask for, is it?

All those MMO maintenance coordinators are fools! Use the frappin 'Scotty System'. If something takes 20 minutes, tell them it'll take 40, that way if you finish on time you're early, great job! IF something goes wrong, you have 20 minutes to clean up and you're on time! How about that.
Oh well. The best is league, server maintenance delayed, delayed, delayed, ok servers up! 30 minute login queue. Trollface :3

@MrTanuki: It's not too much to ask for you to read the forums, which, unlike your suggestion, doesn't require work on their part that can be better spent actually working on the game, rather than catering to a bunch of lazies. The forums will give you a very clear indication of whether or not the game is up.

Maybe a "Server Status" icon or something
Just something simple, I don't expect to have minute to minute updates on the status of their maintenance, but I think something in the launcher or on the home page, like a light or something, that indicates server status would be nice.
But yes, in the meantime, and in the future for now, checking the forums is a very reliable way to determine server status.

Well, Hazel, excuse me for asking for a minute or two to edit an announcement, since it will clearly take the whole development team to do it and precious seconds of updating time will be lost.
I'm also not asking for an exact time or anything, just something beyond knowing that the game isn't up yet; which is the only piece of real info one can gather on the forums.
EDIT: Also, I agree with Daethen's idea.

I understand that maintenance can take longer than what the techs expect it to be. However, when the expected time does roll by, the devs should give some indication of how much longer to expect. Someone earlier in this thread pointed to WoW and how it had frequent maintenance delays, but in WoW they at least gave some sort of update when the time they stated earlier rolled about.
Long story short, devs should be updating their status, especially if it's an hour past the time they originally stated.

Slight Edit
A slight edit to my last opinion. While I still do not expect a play by play account of what's going on, I just realized the part of this that annoys me. (If ever so slightly.)
They gave an estimated time. And once the estimated time went past (by a lot, not just a couple minutes or so) there was no update.
Maybe I'm just spoiled when it comes to things being updated and status given..... (my unit in the military gets over-saturated with the status of things.)
I also like using parentheses. (In case you hadn't noticed ;)) <-- never sure how to do that. (Close a parenthetic statement with a smiley...)

Yeah, I agree. A small update will only take a few minutes at the very most. I understand that something probably went wrong and I'm not foaming at the mouth, threatening to kill someone if it isn't up soon, but just a "hey we're still alive and working on it" would be nice. c:

Updates and maintenances in online games are occasionally longer than anticipated.
I'm sure you'd rather have a long maintenance where they get everything done right than a short one that has very clear signs of them not getting it all done right.
