Why are people so concerned with appearances?

Remember Chris's latest thread? The one where he sold the Shadow Dragon Wings for, I think, 3.5 million crowns?
I don't get why people would spend so much money (it's virtual, but it's still money) on something that does not make your character any stronger in combat.

Reasons to buy accesories:
1. You have already every armor and weapon that you'll ever need. What else are you gonna buy now?
2. Collectionists
3. Identity crisis after seeing so many wolver clones. Want to stand out in some way.

I have money to burn, and I like customizing my appearance. :3

I agree with the 3 above me
and +1 for peacocks for being epic.

I want my character to be unique as possible and to reflect my own personal taste's.

As above, though I'm not at all certain that "Full Snarbolax and Shadow Wings" counts as unique and personal. =P

As far as I know, my character's appearance is most likely completely unique, in the sense that there are some similar, but not exactly like mine.
And it was cheap to achieve :D
Reeeaaaal cheap.
So now I feel special :3
Jk, although I've only worn that costume since I first put it together. I've never used anything else as a costume after that.

And the best part is how these people who do have the money for those things and spend it on them aren't creative at all, and just slap everything on wolver lines. I can't even count how many times I've seen wolvers with halos, wings or tails.
There's not many people with an actual respectable/unique look out there, and barely any with those rare accessories.
Shout-out to Hadn and Fruits, true creative fashion kings!

I like being handsome. I have my equipment, and I like purple. Vita deluxe, chapeau of the purpled rose and divine wings. Fancy pipe. Thats my get-up. I like, and i've yet to see one like it. Did I mention I look snazzy?

+1 Biznasty.
I saw Shadow Dragon Wings on a Vog Cub Coat this morning. It made me want to grab that person and shake them. WHY?!

i put heavy knight vision goggles on a cyclops helmet, i also put a parrying blade on circuit breaker armor....IWIN!

I saw Divine wings on Vog.
wut

it's the endgame in every MMO
deal w/ it nerd

I saw shadow wings on ash tail. D: Why?!
Also, everything military looks good on me because of my personal colour. Accidental money saving ftw.
Shadow wings on an ash tail coat actually makes sense in one instance. I'd assume the guy got the wings from a ce pack, then nailed them to the back of Ash Tail to later upgrade to Snarb. Why hold off on showing off when items retain their accessories when upgraded (if the slot is still there)?

Well, as long as the subject is going to upgrade it to Snarbolax I'm not gonna say anything but...if he turns it into a Vog Cub or Skolver I might become a tiny bit mad, deep, deep inside.

@Biznasty, I disagree.
First off, a wolver tail wouldn't really suit anything BUT the wolver line.
And, one more thing, Hadn takes a dapper combo, and places it on his/her Mercurial demo helm...
That's what you call creative..?
Though sure, it looked 'cool'

Well, I've made a piece that I like to call "The Mercurial Stranger."

Note: was doing random runs with newbs, so actual weapons used not shown.

Because why kill monsters with some dull, boring armor when you can look FABULOUS and kill monsters! :D
But yeah, pretty much what everyone else said. If you have a fair set(s) of gear that you're happy with, and you don't care much for UVs, might as well try having another goal by making yourself look FABULOUS! I do kinda see your point if we're talking about lower tier players who should probably be more focus on going up in tiers, rather than looking pretty.
Also, I want Dark Dragon Wings + Arcane Salamander as a costume set, so I can have an excuse to spam, "FYIAD!!!11!" to everyone who disagrees with me. People won't be able to take me seriously if I don't look like a dragon! D:
- First off, a wolver tail wouldn't really suit anything BUT the wolver line.
I seen some used it with a Cloak type(Like Chaos) set along with the vertical vents and it looked pretty nice. Kinda reminds me of the kitsune from the "Magic the Gathering" block "Kamigawa".(Or at least, in my mind it does...>->)
If I had pictures, I would totally do a comparison.

Wolver tails looks great on the angelic line armors and some of the rose tabards.

For many people, the purpose of life is to look cool.
Whether that takes having the good gear, playing skillfully, or having the new trashy looking sonic the hedgehog promotion. The same holds true everywhere- rich people drive the coolest new foreign automobile, and children in highschool smoke cigarettes, all because they want others to see them as being 'cool'.

A dark colored wolver tail looks downright sexy on Dragon Scale or Chaos Cloak. :D

the point is to look more ballin than the next guy
if you don't understand that then you are just not ballin

First off, a wolver tail wouldn't really suit anything BUT the wolver line.
That's the kind of uncreative thinking I'm talking about. I'm not sure why you'd even claim such, anyway; Sure, it does fit better on Wolver, but c'mon. Preview things on AH, try out Spiral Spy, I dunno - there's tons of great matches.
And, one more thing, Hadn takes a dapper combo, and places it on his/her Mercurial demo helm...

Seems like you didn't watch Hadn for long enough. Dude's got a bunch of interesting costumes; Some odd matches like Shadow Dragon Wings on Surge Breaker, sure, but a lot of his costumes are creative and match well.

I can be unique and original with my look. its just the customization ability in the game that hooks everyone, instead of looking like lookalike clones, with set skill trees, set weapon usability, OOO has given us a great wide variety of mix and match, something im sure all of us exploit to its extreme fullest. Variety, my friend, is the spice of life.

Because inside every big man, there is a repressed costume designer.

@Biznasty, Ahaha, okay my mistake. Though, in my opinion, the WOLVER tail got it's name for a reason.

It's simple. Blame the TV + a few other things and the constant driven need to look and feel good. xD Most of all, blame your parents!!!! BWARGHH!!
Most logical reason that stands out to me is: Once a knight has all they need thus nothing else to spend cash earned in the clockworks, might as well look good whilst being awesome.

hey, at least they don't smell bad and look a mess.
There is a board game store, that I visit on occasion, in the basement of the local mall. A few weeks ago I stopped by looking at the board games with my wife to see if there were any good sales or new games. We wandered closer to the back of the store where they have an area dedicated to playing various games (mostly tabletop and magic). Out of no where (though you would have knew it was coming if you thought about it) you walked into the worst stinky people smell you can imagine. I turned around and walked back to the front of the store rather than looking at the last few games back by those gamers.
TL;DR - I'm glad people care about their appearance. To bad everyone doesn't in real life.

I have 16 5-star swords, 11 5-star guns, 11 5-star helms 11 5-star armor, 8 5-star shields, and a massive catalogue of defensive/offensive trinkets.
I'm running out of things for me to spend it on aside from costumes.

Many of us have the weapons we need, and in our spare time we change our appearance.

I hate being both a collectionist and a rationalist. Talking to myself about how gundams are a waste of money in public looks dumb X.X
I buy acsessories becuase I like wasting my crowns. They really aren't that hard to make.

I'm neither creative nor original--but my White Rose set does look badass. =)
Also, I have a pipe.

I like to be individualized. (Reason why I stay away from all the Wolver duds, cuz soooooo many people have and/or wear it as their costume. I don't care about the super-best stats)
Granted I don't really have any accessories on at the current moment, I do wish to have some, but I'm still building up all 5 star equips. I'd rather bother with that before I go all out on a visor and stuff.

I am an F2P player since the game started and Juances' #1 reason became true to me just as the accessory update arrived...
Of course i dont have every piece of 5* gear, but in a world where people have a common look, i make the effort to look different.

Because people like to make their little guys look cool :3
... well
thats my reason :P
... because that's exactly what I did! A Dusky Tail on a Chaos Cloak. I'm happy with the look; now I just need to craft a Wyvern Scale Helm and earn more crowns for a pair of glasses to go with it.
People buy accessories to look good and feel good about themselves. I mean, when you've gotten all the gears that you need and managed to play well, why not look good while doing so by putting on something extra on your attire? Provided that you have enough crowns/CE to do so, without having to beg for them.
But please, please, please do coordinate the whole look so that it looks pleasing to the eye. I once saw a Knight sporting so many accessories of different colour schemes on his Vog Cub set; the image was burned in my head @_@;

because i have a lot of nice accessories

XD. i know what you mean!
seeing those people who seem to have just bought the cheapest accessory for each piece... so pretty :P

Ijust want to say real quick; the wolver line isn't hideous, just overused.
I see too many people trying to not have wolver on. Well I like it more than other armors :P
Problem?
@Diamonshreddie : Yeah, ikr? So nice to look at... not ;3
@Xylka-Mkii : True, it is exactly because of it being overused that the more veteran players have such an aversion of what they would probably consider the 'commoner's/noob's choice'. In the end though, the wolver line is arguably one of the best-looking armour out there (sans the cap, I find its look weird and unsettling).
My primary armour would still be my trusty Skolver, that I wear as a costume sometimes for a fresh change of look XD

I must add Pawn and Rommil to your list Biz. They do an interesting job of looking different as well as looking good.

For me, I do scrutinize with my appearance a lot, and part of it holds true to being unique. Another part of it also holds to representation of my character; not just me in real life and personality, but also my actual, story character Obsidious himself. I like to be thematic in a manner.
My general appearance would be this: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025026594/screenshot/52265222...
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025026594/screenshot/52265222...?
Give me a pair of Prismatic Glow eyes, a sky blue color (Or maybe cyan), and perhaps a ghostly aura, and my character's main appearance is set.
And before anyone asks, yes, I use USE that armor; no, I'm not stupid, I've done my research and math, and I understand everyone else's opinion on it, but I HAVE my reasons for using. That said, I always keep Volcanic Demo suit when I need to get serious with arenas and boss stratums.

Why are you so concerned with the way I think? Eh? Eh?

@Shidara, I beg to differ, shadow dragon wings on Skolver actually looks pretty awesome
http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198046374778/screenshot/47086124...

agreed.
Free fashion advice.
Snarby cap with divine halo + divine mechtenna (or mechwings/helmguards, whatever)
skolver coat with shadow wings (+shadow bomb bandolier when they make one :)

You will see me chilling around Haven with my Proto Armor with Cool Dragon Wings + Cool Canteen. My Green Chap with Dusky Pipe looks good with it.
I got most of the gear I'll ever want, and I want to fill out my collection. Its an achievement for me since I am F2P and have 20 pieces of 5* gear.
Currently trying to acquire most of the costumes, since I collected all the 1* and 2* recipes (besides a few worthless ones like the 2* blazebreak shield).
Peacocks.
