Ok the title explains it all, I have all four star versions of them and I have all the CE, but not the Cr or the recipes yet(Or heat) Lol I'm planning ahead, which one should I make first?
What first? Mercurial Mail/Helm, Or Crest Of Almire?
Think about it. To craft Merc Demo, you have to do a shadow lair. Seeing as Gremlonium costs a ton on the AH, he'd probably prefer to do RRT, which is CRAZY HARD. I'D have Merc Demo if I could get it... need to make a sword that can hit the twins first, though.
EDIT: Also, standard Merc is good for fighting Skolvers with a Polaris, and he might have more trouble from Beasts and Slimes (more likely Slimes) than Gremlins and Constructs. They both look awesome in their own way, so that's really not a factor in choosing between the two of 'em.

Sunshards?
Shadow key costs less CE (in a party of 4) then a single 5* item and I bought Gremlonium for below 20kcr recently. Gathering a decent party can in some cases be a problem, but that's not a thread for this.
If he's making it as a costume, then my arguments are invalid, but if he needs the stats there are more useful armors ( Mercurial Demo for bombers, Skolver for swordsmen and Justifier for gunners).
If he's a bomber and he needs a vs-piercing armor, I guess Mercurial not-demo could be useful, but I'd still choose something with offensive bonuses (you know, offense is the best defense :D ). There are other niches for this armor (like using it if you have other bonuses covered by trinkets and UV's), but if OP probably wouldn't ask if that was the case.
I understand you want this fancy shield that has a ton of defense but it's unnecessary later in the game. Once you get more experienced, shields that give you more benefits such as the Barbarous Thorn Shield and Swiftstrike Buckler will be enough. And using those shields now will help you get used to them faster than going through the trouble of noticing you don't need such a defensive shield later in the game.
If you didn't know already, the Barbarous Thorn Shield gives a Medium Damage Increase to your swords and the Swiftstrike Buckler gives a High Attack Speed Increase to every gun and sword.
But it makes this game more fun if you experience stuff like this by yourself. It's also fun to try new equipment out just for fun. It's what I did with the Mercurial set and it's one of my favorite sets now. ^^
Well if you're a bomber, the most defensive shields are the best shields. I have a crest of almire myself for my mercurial demo set. But Tennis is right. Every time I see a gunner without a swiftstrike buckler I am bewildered. Why would you trade up flexibility and dps for the illusion of more defensive equipment? I say illusion because having a sturdy shield just isn't the same as having a sturdy armor or faster clips, and whenever your shield is low or broken, you are practically naked.
There's no reason NOT to own a swiftstrike if you are a gunner, you'll benefit from it much more than with holding a defensive shield, trust me.
As for swordsmen, it's controversial.
I own a Swifty, and the recipe, and will quite happily make them on order. For gunners, you don't really need a shield as much as the other two.
Just get a Swifty, unless you're a bomber. I'm a sword user, and I use the Swifty, and I still don't die much.
To an extent, skill>gear.
If you have no other Shadow shield, then definitely the Almire, it gets a huge boost on 5* (because it gets status resists).
Why are you even making Mercurial armor, for costume? Because if not, Mercurial Demo will probably be more useful in the future, even if you're not primarily a bomber.
