A friend of mine had a shadow key that he was holding until it disappeared.
After sending a bug report he was told that shadow keys have timers.
Any reason why?

How old was it, who was it bought from, and at what price?
Holy crap. If this is true, it's a total con. Do silver keys have timers? Am I gonna lose the ones I got during the Christmas promo?
I'm just gonna assume your friend lied to protect my sanity.
He unboxed it around christmas/january and lost it sometime after.
we only are bringing it up now because we have been gearing up for a shadow run
I have one of the first ever unboxed shadow keys from back in October and its still intact. I'm guessing your friend traded it and then forgot about it.
I'm positive I unboxed a shadow key I a long time ago. as LaN said it was around christmas and it was the only key I had. I'm sure some of you are thinking I sold it but I"m also positive I didn't. I really didn't care about it much but I also wasn't watching my backpack everyday so I have no idea when it went missing. it could have been months ago. So at this point I have filed a bug report and hopefully if I can't have it back they can at least tell me if my memories are wrong and I did end up selling it. If not then I do hope they can give me a replacement since we have been preparing for a shadow run for a while now and don't want to waste any more time saving up crowns and CE to buy a shadow key.
When shadow keys first appeared, they did come with a timer. To say the least, the community went nuts over this, and shadow keys had a redo, now without a timer and being sold via the mission interface/gotten by unboxing.
It's likely you're friend might have gotten a box from that time, and got a key that had a timer.
Such boxes are non-existent now, as all of them should have a chance to give a timer-less shadow key.
yes but what of the key that he lost? is his key just gone forever? and what of the guy who said he has the first of the shadow keys unboxed in october, wouldnt those keys also have expired by now?
They did? Somehow I don't remember that... Then again, my key might not be the same. I probably sold it and quickly got another along the way.
@OP I'm sure the GMs will be sympathetic. Just send a support ticket.
If this is true, then I'm going to end up losing 11 Shadow Keys. And if that ends up happening to me I really will quit this game...
The timer thing is way, way old, folks. You don't have to worry about it now, since the timer no longer exists.
Edit: At least I'm pretty sure it no longer does.
i know the timer is way old, i just want some word from somebody who can do something about it if he is going to get the key back or not.
Schrödinger's key
If there are still lockboxes in circulation from the original batch (somewhere somehow, there are), are the contents static and tied to the antiquated rules or do the contents get RnG'd upon opening according to the most recent law of physics?
Did you ask him HOW it disappeared? Also, did he use the SL key and lie to you about it?

I vaguely recall Nick mentioning in an old thread somewhere that it's the latter.
Contents are decided upon opening. Saving data space, and all.
lol thanks guys I should have thought of that!
He didn't use the shadow key. We've been saving it for a shadow run we've been prepping for.
Eh? How true is this? I kept a Shadow Key that I won on Twitter (promo code) all the way from late October to just recently in May. Never heard of this timer thing ever. I'm pretty sure that keys do not expire and never have
Seems like the timer was only brought up as a possible explanation for this one missing key. I can also not remember anything about keys having timers.
The amount of time that has passed makes forgetfulness seem like a much more plausible explanation.
You won that key in a promo, you didn't unbox it, he did. your point is moot.
Point stands. Accepting an item through mail (as would be with a promo) is identical to unboxing an item. Both processes have two steps: doing the action (accepting the item or opening a box) and then the actual adding of the item into your Arsenal. All Shadow Keys are identical, as are multiples of any accessories, (unused) usables, tokens, materials, and probably trinkets.
Your friend is telling you a lie, and uh, you don't get replies for bug reports.
Also, uh, Shadow Keys never had timers.
I've never heard of this. Usually the tooltips of items that expire will list the expiration date and time.
Also, I still have shadow keys from many months ago sitting around in my arsenal...
