You forumers harshly criticize new players for not using the search bar, but since the search results don't show the creation dates of the threads, they are more likely to resurrect dead threads in the process, for which you criticize them again. Not that they shouldn't use the search bar or check the thread creation dates, but don't be so nasty about it when they fail at forum ethics.
Search bar = undead threads
True, but it would be a lot more easier if there were a way we could choose to sort the threads in different ways. As in "sort by relevance", no. of replies, by date, etc., etc.
The search function brings up terrible results as far as my experience goes.
I don't use the search function in the forums. If I want to find something, I just google it.
By default it searches by relevance.
If you don't put quotation marks around the phrase you're searching for, it just brings up the thread where the words you're searching for appear the most amount of times.
I also believe that it ignores words three letters long or less.
"results don't show the creation dates of the threads, they are more likely to resurrect dead threads in the process,"
So, the dates on every post in thread are not enough? Lets face it, if someone necroes a thread without even knowing it he is complete ignorant (or even more)
Search bar = Knowledge and History.
Search bar = Silence is Golden.
It's always the same non-contributors that do it.
Make a thread that's been made before
Oh my god use the search function, this thread has been made a million times, whine whine whine.
Post in an old thread with a relevant response
Oh my god read post dates why did you bump this thread with your perfectly relevant post you are messing up my forums.
I guarantee you if I made a thread identical to this in a week's time, I could tick off a list of people that would say those things and they would all post in it.
Ah, the joys of Drupal.
Maybe we should ask for better forums...
TO THE SUGGESTIONS SUBSECTION!

It's not drupal's fault. It's OOO's refusal to implement all the functions of drupal. For example when you search for something using the search bar you see at the end of each thread it says "0 attachments". That is how we put pics into our posts but OOO doesn't let us upload images so we can't use it.
Yeha. Just like other forum scripts like PHPbb3, phpbb fusion, SMF Drupal uses extensions/plugins/extra features. They have to be installed, integrated, activated etc. but they allow users to enjoy forum more and they make forum more functional...
Guess why OOO didnt do anything about it? Reason? Dont know, maybe same because of what videos and screenshots on media section of website are still showing old equipment and monsters.
Everybody slips up, but it seems fairly obvious when someone hasn't done a search or gotten to know the forums - which comes off as (strangely enough) incredibly hubristic, and invites censure. I do get the distinct impression that some people hang around just waiting for the kill, though.
I 'd also have to agree that the search function is abysmal for these (or most other) purposes. Like Dorael I'll use a Google site search, as I've been unable to find threads I know are there even with exact phrases. Regarding the rest of the functionality: I don't mind the lack of signatures or inline pictures, honestly. The forums look pretty tidy without them.
On topic again: What date range is considered necromancy? That is, is there a discreet amount of days? Would one week be too much for some forumgoers? One month the upper limit? I agree with consolidating threads, but not being able to pick up a relevant conversation where it left off because it's been bumped to the second page (or starting a new thread only to be linked to an ancient one) can be bewildering.
I imagine some people would allow for relevance, but I certainly wouldn't try testing it, not in GD.
In my eyes, there are two types of thread resurrections, necessary good ones, and unnecessary bad ones. If a thread is in need of bumping; e.g. its about a topic you are interested in like the addition of pets, then you can and should post your thoughts on that thread, mentioning that you are bumping it and that you feel that it is still relevant. If however, you find a random old thread and say "ROFL, I'm going to necro this thread for no reason" than you deserve a ban.
I suppose that this really goes back to mine craft, where I would classify people who broke the rules as either malicious or not… the malicious people came on with the intention of breaking the rules, the not malicious people came on to see what the game was about. If someone is malicious, then they should be banned, if someone is not malicious, they should be informed of what they are doing wrong and helped into conforming to the rules so that we can all have a better site/server. And thats really how I see the people who necro threads, some are there to grief/troll, and deserve a ban, and others are there to post, but are simply new to the internet in general.
Actually it does show creation date.
It also shows the thread creator and number of replies.
But really, the kids on these forums will take any excuse to complain and try to defame other people.
The forums would be better if they were banned.
