Shield Mechanic Question
If I am in the middle of fire with my shield activated what happens in the following situations?
Scenario 1
Shield - Normal shield without any fire resistance what so ever.
Will I get the burn dot regardless of wether I have my shield activated or not?
If the shield has high magic resist will the burn tick for less when the shield is up? Let's say I am out of potions and I just want to ride out the dot in my shield to reduce the overall damage it incurs.
Scenario 2
Shield - Maximum fire resist shield
If my shield was already activated then I will simply catch a very small duration fire?
If I activate my shield after catching on fire with a long duration burn will it reduce the duration or the damage?
Scenario 3
Gear - I have maximum fire resist on my other gear but I have a grey owlite shield
Does the fire resist on the shield do anything? Or is it worthless since I already have maximum resist?
A few weeks ago it seems the resists on shields have been changed and no longer apply passively, so on any kind of fire situation, for example, it wouldn't grant any extra fire resist. (or rather, it wouldn't reduce fire's duration or power at all)
The resists however help the shield survive longer against monster attacks that would inflict that specific status effect. (for example, a Grey Owlite would resist Sparky's gun bullets and Red Rover's flamethrowers pretty well, however Sick or Slush puppies would be able to break the shield much more easily, since it does not resist poison or freeze)
But I'm not really sure if this is exactly how it works, because of one specific thing: Vanaduke's Fire Snakes.
It's pretty simple. I use a Vog Cub Cap with Maximum Fire Resist UV, and a normal Vog Cub Coat, and a Grey Owlite. I would guess because of the cap, I am immune to the snakes - My other friends and guildies who used Vog Cub aswell, without any UVs but with a Volcanic Plate instead of Grey Owlite would get set on fire by the snakes.
But I once ran Vanaduke without the coat, using Ancient Plate Mail instead, which does not offer fire resist - Overall, I ended with less fire resist than a normal Vog Cub set without variants would offer, (...kind of weird? If stacked with the armor's own fire resist, it seems the effect of the UV decreases a little, but if not stacked, it offers as much as a 5* armor) yet... I was still immune to the fire snakes.
But that is really the single only thing that I have ever noticed, for passive resists. In general, it's safe to say that resists are not passive and only make a shield defend X attacks better.
And as a note, shielding during the status effect does not do anything at all. Except for shock, which will block the tick's damage. For fire, it'll deal damage regardless.
If you have maximum resist, the resist on your shield (probably) does nothing.
The resist on your shield may do nothing anyway, at least unless you use it right (and what's right is unclear). It's been stated by some very advanced players that shield resists are always-on, but I was playing with the equipment and character screen and saw that your shield resistances do -not- show on your gear summary resistances. (I couldn't figure out a way to put my shield up while the character screen was showing though.)
That makes me think shield resistances only take effect when the shield is up, which means only if you already have maximum resist will the resistance on the shield help, and then only if you shield during the effect. Or shield resistances might just do something unexpected and different from armor resistances.
Edit: Also, shielding usually prevents you from receiving status in the first place if you shield at the right time and don't get your shield broken and don't unshield in, say, a greiver status haze.
