Why have so many guilds died?

Sup.

I'm the GM of THO, and we love to do GvG.

However, almost every guild I ask to fight us tells me they don't have enough people online. From the 20 guilds I asked the other day, around 17 had less than 4 people online. What the heck man. We only got to do 3 matches last week because of this. So my question is, did everyone quit, become USA or is everyone too spread out over dead guilds which leaves no players for active guilds?

My guess is B and C

But everyone is probably doing the event. From what I can tell it is also finals week for many people in the US, so there are probably a bunch of players studying.

The papaya suspects...

I personally believe that this is a plot from OOO to abduct everyone who plays SK with their mind-sucking machines which suck minds as you wouldn't expect, they will done use the sucked minds to make more mind sucking machines as the mind sucking machines rely on brains which have been mind sucked with mind sucking machines. OOO is planning to use these mind sucking machines to bring global peace whilst solving poverty on the way cause why not.

They've already caught all of my friends! I must protect my guildies T_T

GvG will probably remain less

GvG will probably remain less active than normal while the holiday event is going on. (Spiking a little as people get bored near the end.) This happens every year during Halloween, too, so it isn't too surprising. People want those limited time items!

The papaya must have the right answer.

I like my poker. Don't judge me.

My guild is kind of small, and it's almost dead. I've already left two other dead guilds. (note the fact that these three guilds don't or didn't play GvG)

It's sad because new players join guilds, and then stop playing entirely because most of them were probably just seeing if the game was good or not. :(

Let me Tell you this why

Let me tell you about my guild before I became a strider, a person without a guild. Oh, I was one of the first people to join the guild, my GM Sckaar apparently had a bad recruiting system, sending random invites to everyone, and she does not promote anyone past member just because they did not donate enough. So, as long you donate, you get promoted. Not only that, she puts two energy wells in the Lobby just for the lols. She literally whines about donations, and some players hate her for it. She has kicked out some already, including me, and many, many left themselves. She has a bad temper, due to her hormones and her guild has no fun, only making pranks on people that make other people angry. She laughs at everything but can't have what she wants. It eventually builds up to the point where there was a mutiny. She kicked me out because of her mood swings. Her guild is Falling Stars. Anyone know her? Tell her she was fooled. I have been planning to leave the guild for a long time. The only reason I stood there for a long time is because I was looting info off the guild, acting dangerously as a double agent. I really don't care I've been kicked out. What a laugh!

I can't speak for the rest of

I can't speak for the rest of you, but I know that my guild, Aeonic Doom, died after most of our active members and officers/Guild Masters left because of stuff irl. I personally also took a long break from SK that contributed to that, by not really helping keep the guild going, and as a result its dead now.

I'd guess the same happened with lots of other guilds, as the new players cycled in and the older ones cycled out. But what do I know /shrug

?_?

My first guild (made up mostly of IRL friends and their friends) died because well, they all kind of lost interest in the game lol. It was fun though. I literally only played with those friends and guild members for my first 2-3 weeks into the game.

My next one died as a combination of the following:
- Older/richer/more renowned players losing interest and quitting game (it's bound to happen lol).
- Someone tried to make a sister guild (before the guild update that allowed member limit increases) and took half the players with her. The ones who weren't online thought it was a rivalry thing and rage-left the guild.
- Someone new was promoted to officer, and soon after that, some people got really up tight about guild ranks and left.
- The ones who became GMs and continued playing didn't really bother to recruit other players.

I was actually more surprised about the guild-rank drama though. Coming from how normal the interactions were with us as IRL friends in the first guild, I never really put any thought into ranks and all that. It was more of a friend-list extension to me for the friends of friends that I didn't know, haha.

Using words from above, the old players cycled out, but they stopped cycling new players in lol.

I'm fairly sure that's kind of Spiral Knight's predicament as of late. You can see they're trying to put more focus on easing new players into the game - just look at the updates over the past year.

Now if I were a good GM that cared about the health of my game/guild, I'd focus on recruiting new, fun, and social players, trying to keep the magic in the game as well.

I remember starting out that there was a really popular guild that recruited in a similar way (looking for players who were 'cool' in general, and not necessarily doing so based on skill and such). I even remember playing GvG Blast Network with them and seeing their GM scold one of their members for trash talking and calling us noobs after the games.
...It's so strange how hated they are in Lockdown/forums nowadays, haha.

One of the key challenges

One of the key challenges that any f2p game faces is the turnover in players. This extends down to guilds, too...

If you're a guild just mass recruiting players, particularly new ones, there's a very high chance they'll go inactive within weeks.

Even Jempire, EoS, and Guild, three of the oldest guilds, only have a handful of their original members still around from launch playing actively. (And I think Guild may be mostly dead now.) But it's not too surprising, as Spiral Knights is kind of lacking in any meaty end-game content that isn't Lockdown. People move on to new games or other MMO's.

I think as the guild leader, you have the opportunity to do a lot to make sure your guild succeeds where others have failed, Scirio!

Despite my guild's inactivity, I don't really mind if it died and I was the only one (well, I would mind, but of course I'm not going to leave).

Ugh. How do I say this? Despite my guild only having 3-4 guys online at a time (with me being the most active), I really don't see it dying.

Granted, I am only an officer (most recent, in fact. Been there for 2 years), I still have a whole bunch of things to do for myself before I can retire (Is that a new term? I thought of it myself. Will explain later), and they're doing what they want as well. One guy put in 500K to the GH so we should last for about a few months. No one really goes into design mode, and my GM rarely gets online.

But, my guild (Revelation) is home to some of the best people I met in my 2 and 1/2 years of playing and 2 years of being there (including the all-famous Jwake). I have helped them through tough times, and vise versa. I would never leave for the life of me.

And no, we don't PvP.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Retired" being someone who has done everything they ever wanted to do, has either every item in existence or what they want, just either loitering around Haven, hanging in the GH with guildies, or doing random PvP/PvE. Being super rich and tripped out with accessories and UVs on every item is completely optional. (Come on! Let's make a new meme!)

This is what I've been waiting for.

@annilaton
Hey man, you could’ve just said “I don’t like her guild” without adding a storm of insults. Sckaar is a close friend to me and I think it’s uncool you bashed her like this. However, I will use this info not to make the same misakes.

For the rest of you, it pains me a lot to see active players just chilling in inactive guilds who have 3 people online on a good day. I know I shouldn’t recruit here but who cares, I’m doing my best to recruit active members. So for those of you who are bored, move dat booty to THO. Don't feel obligated to stay in your dead inactive guild, I think that's the problem for new guilds. It's difficult to get members if all of them feel like they should remain in an inactive guild, all the while they're super active.

Thanks for the tips however.

The main reason why guilds

The main reason why guilds die is lack of good leadership. What I mean by that is the GMs and/or officers don't play much, and don't recruit or prune inactive members when they do play. There are far too many GM's who made a guild because they thought it would be cool, convinced a bunch of players to join, then lost interest when the HUGE amount of time, effort and resources required became clear.

And as others have said, most people don't play LD much when events like Winterfest are ongoing, because they want to stock up on the time-limited goodies and make some profit to invest in their knights/guilds.

Ppl don't do gvg anymore because there are barely any decent LD guilds anymore and it's boring playing the same ppl over and over again... Also SK's community is smaller than it used to be, if you haven't noticed. Dat OOO doesn't put out updates fast enough, or they put out content that nobody wants. OOO wai u do dis

End-game content just tends

End-game content just tends to focus heavily on GvG, and one guild in particular has dominated that scene for quite some time now. Challenge Mode might add more PvE end-game content, someday.

It would be cool if there were prizes given to ALL of the top 10 guilds each week, so that there was more incentive for the other guilds to play, too. I think you'd see a lot more of the smaller / new guilds playing that way, which would increase the pool quite a bit, and allow the new guilds to play in matches against teams that haven't been practicing together for 1-2+ years.

The reason why guilds are

The reason why guilds are dying is because the game is starting to die out. Truth hurts, but have you noticed the scandalous marketing ploys and massive updates happening in very short periods of time? The game had so much potential......

The only GvG guilds out there are Jempire and 21. It's like TF2's storyline all over again :L.

Soon someone will have to rise up and send an army of mechs at them both to take their guildhalls with explosives in a hatch in the ground :L

I'd like to see activity numbers.

So there was a week where only 8 guilds even played lockdown? Hahaha, that's pretty awful, but so is lockdown.

If we could directly challenge other guilds to insure a no waiting in que time and a game for fun rather than competitive overkill, I'd be much more tempted to play.

But I'm not gonna play, nor encourage my guildmates to play, in G v. G matches where the score's not even close and the members of the other team make it personal (which is what guilds like Jempire and Echo of Silence would do if I or my guild were playing).

Give us challenge mode - it would remove waiting, random match ups, and a lot of bad sportsmanship since those teams wouldn't get matches.

P.S. In regards to being "scared" to play. It's hard to see anyone being scared - it's just a harmless game, after all. Players do, however, want a good close game and know they won't get that against "pro" guilds.

And besides, we fought EoS as you can see on the link, yet they were very kind during and after the match. So your stereotyping is quite unnecessary.

<insert witty comment here>

My Guild Tectonic is struggling to keep active members.

Either current long-time members quit because the game no longer interests them, we've recruited new people who go inactive because the game doesn't interest them enough to play long-term or players leave to join another Guild or start their own.
