Buying Energy for anything on steam

Hello, i recently received a 100$ steam giftcard, but I cannot turn on steam overlay to purchase energy, even though when i do it wont recognize that it is turned on. So either what do i do to enable the steam overlay on my macbook pro OS X el Capitan v10.11.6 , or how do i get energy
