If we could get rid of the snowflakes in ice areas (ice arenas, ice clockworks, ice lockdown maps), we could seriously take out a large sum of haters for these kinds of maps, because I think a lot of these maps are really cool--but they make me and most of the people I know lag, which is why they hate them. Obviously particle effects have impact on other parts of the game as well.
If they could have an option to disable it, it could really help.
Please add a "Disable particle effects" option to video>graphics
Well guys, i have to say, spiral knights already have really low requisites for the current games, and you still can enable compatibility mod and reduce graphics so that old computers can run it.
I think it would be very frustrating for the devs if they put so much effort to make a beautiful game and people would just disable all effects.
I must admit, however, that this kind of feature comes in most games nowadays, and since some people really need it:
+1.
spiral knights already have really low requisites
...
With Comp Mod
Polaris/Supernova bullets are still extremely graphically heavy
Snarby weapons, AP/Sent look odd w/ delayed fade
Totodrone shields have those delayed fade away which makes it impossible to see where your knight is since it turns black for a brief moment
Don't know how else to explain it, but it's just odd and could use some fixing :/
The particle effects are responsible for a large amount of lag as well, and really need reworking from what I've heard.
having either a "high" or "low" option is stupid because its either lag or ugly, +1
The minimum required hardware to run Potato Knights was released over a decade ago. I'm not sure OOO should focus their attention to a group of players whose numbers will only grow smaller with time.
Sorry, I'm a jerk.
SK is not the best-optimized game, plus it runs on java so it can only use one core. And anyway, not everyone can afford to constantly update their hardware. Personally I have a 2.7GHz i7 sandy bridge (4 cores, real+virtual) CPU, AMD Radeon 6630M GPU, and 16GB of ram, but if I run SK at high gfx my framerate drops below 30. Something like removing particle effects - which are, from my understanding, fairly graphically intensive - would help me out, even though my machine isn't that outdated.
Plus, removing particle effects isn't entirely a performance-related option, either. It's aesthetic too - some people might not like particles. :P

"The minimum required hardware"
"The minimum"
"minimum"
I personally got a brand new CPU in 2012 that could run twice the required hardware Spiral Knights takes, and yet SK still gives me 16 FPS to this day (or at least fraps says I get 16 FPS).
I can run League of Legends or TF2 or Dota or CS:GO perfectly fine, but Spiral Knights is absolutely horrid and it really comes down to the fact that the particle effects use way too much memory to make. Just having a few little snowflakes here and there that many people don't even notice isn't something that should be forced on people just because why the hell not. Most games that I play (and I play quite a few) allow for particle effects to be disabled, and I can run them perfectly fine at a solid 60 FPS. Just because some people can handle it, doesn't mean the vast majority of players can. In any given LD game, I can see at least 3-4 people complain about lag on things like ice maps, and I've seen many-a players fall down yelling "LAG" in a freeze arena. I've also seen quite a few new players completely turned off from the game simply because they couldn't handle the immense lag in many areas, causing them to waste their sparks.
If the bare minimum is what we need, then at the very least, access to the bare minimum is what we should get.
Never got why this isn't automatically done when you're running in compatibility mode.

Even with over the minimum people still have problems with this game. in my opinion, its java. Since java isn't the best thing to build your game off of.
I'm no expert, but im sure if you surpass the recommended hardware needed, than you should be able to run at a smooth 60 fps. Unless the game is locked at 30, i dunno, i usually get about 25 fps on high.
But i like the settings on high, since its just...pretty.
Many other games have the option to set the graphics quality as low as possible to maximize performance speed. I for one wouldn't mind simpler, flat textures, a lack of cosmetic particle effects, and more low-polygonal models, if it meant I could get more consistency in performance in areas that shouldn't be graphics intensive (IMF, Avenue, and Mines come immediately to mind)
To anybody voting against this option:
A. This isn't even a vote???
B. Sure must be nice to have decent computers or be able to afford to buy upgrades.
C. If you don't like turning particle effects off why on earth would you turn them off if given the choice? This does not apply to you at all! :C
Doesn't it suck when a large group of enemies spawn and suddenly one of your partymates is charging their sword and running into a wall for 20 seconds? I hate doing that to people with my terrible PC, but I can't imagine having to deal with that constantly. If something can reduce lag for myself and others, I am completely for it.
Well-said, Addy. There is no logical disadvantage to this option, except maybe the work it would take to put in (which, I imagine would not be very difficult or lengthy.)
+1. Due to the fact i average 12 FPS in Haven, 21 FPS in average Clockwork Floors and 15 FPS in Firestorm Citadel this could really help me out.
So you want to be a bunch of quarks, is that it? PARTICLES ARE IMPORTANT, BRO
The most ideal solution would be to revamp the particle system into something that isn't horrifically unoptimized, but failing that, at least giving the option to disable it would be a nice stopgap. My computer's fairly ancient, but I can run far more demanding games than SK and get substantially better framerates.
+1 for the anti rain/snow
but does this include the particle effects of other player/mobs
many mobs have particle effects that are needed to assess battle plans.

This doesn't really affect me because the game is playable, but I know people who have a very hard time with lag because their computers are much weaker than mine.
Even though I have an acceptable machine for running games on (Dell Inspiron 5520 with a 10 GB RAM upgrade and a 1920x1080 32" TV screen) (the graphics card isn't the best (it's like a $50 one I think)), I still get pretty lame framerate, like Dibs does. The framerate drops a bit when I'm in freeze-themed levels due to the snow, and it drops to like 5 fps while I'm in the Core (D29).
I always found the game to be poorly optimized, just like Minecraft. My computer can only run MC at like 30 fps. Good ol' Java...
As someone who has lagged out in these areas in the past, I wholeheartedly agree here. I definitely have the minimum requirements and it still sometimes causes a framedrop.
A lot of times my game flat out freezes whenever it tries to load a new preview window for a weapon or a piece of armor. I know that shouldn't happen, yet it does. G-Mod (yes, G-Mod) on the same comp has better performance in full servers than Haven alone.
Not to mention all of the particles that exist in IMF... >.>
