Make it so that there is a small chance that instead of making the dainty popping noise and rewarding the player, the treasure box blows up like the other explosive blocks, but with a larger radius.

But instead of showing up in a predetermined place they could be that HP prize box that would regularly save you from 1% hp but instead would kill you and then make players ragequit SK for messing with them like that.............

Predetermined place... perhaps but I see it as an easy way for the pros who know to let or tell those who don't to break those boxes so they die.

It would be like in The Binding of Isaac, where you can get health down pills after fighting a mini boss. I really love it when games punish the player for no reason, and I think this frustration would really benefit the game. I'm being totally serious here.
For a moment I thought you were talking about prize boxes and I thought that would be hilarious. Players would start opening a box, and the box would open, spawn a little exclamation point over the player (like those in the Collector mission), then explode, making the player play the downed animation. While on the ground, the item that was unboxed would appear above the player's head and a cosmetic ER would kick in.
As for making treasure boxes explode... No. I would rather have "trap" treasure boxes set up in gremlin-themed levels that look slightly different and are actually explosive blocks (same radius, green boxes only), and in specific scenario rooms. Some boxes would be treasure boxes, others would be explosives. Think: Ghosts in the Machine's medical bay.

But Fangel's idea is more on point. A trap box to punish players that are unobservant would be pretty good. But in turn, you'll just have most players shoot the boxes open and dashing away. Even if they aren't explosive.
I also like the idea of an exploding prize box. maybe that could be apart of a new promo with explosive-themed items. I just wanna see someone get exploded, and take out half of the crowd around them in Haven 1.

I have a feeling that Fehzor is trying to make a statement with this...
make it a hidden update along with some bugfixes so players dont know its happened (so they dont start shooting them from afar untill they know), and i assume the range would be similar to the rocket shells that explode in IMF (2 block radius)
