~Hello everyone! I'd like to start off by apologizing if this is the wrong section for this post!

I have always had my web account since roughly after the game came out, and for the past 2 years I have made steam my main gaming platform, and I was wondering if adding spiral knights would do me any good. I have about 16,000-17,000 hours on spiral knights, and I never converted to steam.

~first off I would like to know If steam servers are down for maintenance or technical issues, would I still be able to log in the spiral knights servers?

~Not that this is too important, but will my achievements move on over or my hours? (Although I doubt my stats wouldn't carry over)

~And of course if i have a steam knight, would I be asked if I want to replace those player slots with the account I'm converting?

~Correct me if I am wrong, since converting to a steam account makes your web client no longer able to work, and needs your steam client for logging in, I'm assuming this is safer from hackers who may manage to uncover my account password and access my account, seeing as how steam is very secure and sends email alerts and everything pertaining to account access and where and what IP's have logged into it or attempted to, and of course the lovely steam guard codes for every new computer and device, and browser in email, if this is right on the dot, it probably is enough for me to convert my account!

Once again, apologies if this is in the wrong section I have been away from the net for quite a long time due to other interests. thank you guys for your time and your answers are appreciated! (Even if some will inevitably be silly! hehe!)

-Tom

Perhaps!

But maybe one will see this post and say something too, if not it's okay, they're quite busy most of the time, possibly managing more important support tickets.

If you still can see don't look at me!

It's way more safe but anytime connection to steam is lost (even if just for a moment) you will probably get annoying disconnecteds. And if you do that you won't be asked to replace steam slots. Those will just be removed forever (all of them).

"I have about 16,000-17,000 hours on spiral knights, and I never converted to steam."

Dude, get a life.

"first off I would like to know If steam servers are down for maintenance or technical issues, would I still be able to log in the spiral knights servers?"

No, but maintences like this happens maybe two times per half of year.

"will my achievements move on over or my hours?"

Achivements may move, hours surely no unless you will idle them (Good luck xD).

"And of course if i have a steam knight, would I be asked if I want to replace those player slots with the account I'm converting?"

All your current Steam account knights will be erased.

"I'm assuming this is safer from hackers who may manage to uncover my account password and access my account, seeing as how steam is very secure and sends email alerts and everything pertaining to account access and where and what IP's have logged into it or attempted to, and of course the lovely steam guard codes for every new computer and device, and browser in email, if this is right on the dot, it probably is enough for me to convert my account!"

In theory Steam should be safer, but you must be cautious, since scammers on steam are plague - There are hundreds of fake Steam websites, fake traders, some hacks.
Still, Steam guard is OK thing if you are not stupid enough to give someone your e-mail password, but always check if URL of steam you are trying to log on is steampowered.com or steamcommunity.com, sometimes scammers edit only one letter like steamcomunity. Hard to spot it is, but your browser should show "Trusted - Valve Corporation".

"~first off I would like to know If steam servers are down for maintenance or technical issues, would I still be able to log in the spiral knights servers?"

If steam servers are down, you can't be online on steam (DUH), but you can still play other offline games in "offline mode"

"~Not that this is too important, but will my achievements move on over or my hours? (Although I doubt my stats wouldn't carry over.

I started on steam so I don't know this one.

"~And of course if i have a steam knight, would I be asked if I want to replace those player slots with the account I'm converting?"

You would still have those player slots (if the standalone account you are converting has three toons all three would be carried over.)

"~Correct me if I am wrong, since converting to a steam account makes your web client no longer able to work, and needs your steam client for logging in, I'm assuming this is safer from hackers who may manage to uncover my account password and access my account, seeing as how steam is very secure and sends email alerts and everything pertaining to account access and where and what IP's have logged into it or attempted to, and of course the lovely steam guard codes for every new computer and device, and browser in email, if this is right on the dot, it probably is enough for me to convert my account!"

...everything on the internet can be hack, so just because your on steam doesn't make your account special. You can just buy energy and boxes with steam wallet funs (Yes, the typo IS ON PURPOSE) BUY EVERYTHING VALVE HAS NOW!

nevermind, mtax got it

some reason?

Is there some reason to believe that accessing Spiral Knights through the web site is insecure?

Yeah steam itself has bots and Phishers

I've had run ins with spammer bots sending me links and such, I open them in a virtual machine and they end up being trojans that ask for administrator permissions, those alone can probably get the person your steam password, if steam suspects suspicious account activity it disables all community features, annoying, especially when you have to send a ticket to get your account unlocked and verified, but its very secure. worst thing that happens with steam is if numbnuts like lizard squad DDoS it for like 20 min, or giving your email password away. but of course I'm convinced steam is more secure, despite having a very long password already, might as well connect with steam considering I have plenty of other games. Ever get a kick out of those steam phishing sites mtax? I've seen them before, not only does the valve certification become absent but the URL is often a misspelling or has terrible grammar on the webpage. Having OCD I spot those a lot, sometimes I spam fake logins just to troll the phisher, and boy does it anger them! I don't play Spiral Knights as much as I did, so maintenance isn't much a concern, I guess especially if its not often. My steam knights were just alts, so they can all go bye bye. Maybe its best my hours don't show considering how many I have in, achievements, awesome I guess, those useless legacy achievements can stay at least; [I was one of those who picked up minerals and deposited them all the time, and that gives me utter importance!]

Well, thank you folks for the helpful and (quite fast) responses, especially on a Monday.

PS: Life is boring when winter extends itself past spring and starts in fall here in Chicago, Wouldn't want to live in Skyrim either if it existed!

EDIT: To be totally realistic, a portion of my in game time, consisted of going AFK, Numerous times, all the more reason why Having a lot of RAM to spare, and processor cores contributed to that, otherwise I probably wouldn't have left it running all the time.

Moving to steam to avoid

Moving to steam to avoid hacking? That's like moving to a city to avoid car accidents. Sure, the roads may be safer and better maintained, but there's WAY more people so that evens out the odds.

Am I the only person who realised there's only 17,000 hours in two years, and thus to have that many hours you'd have to be Tsukasa or just be idling at all times, in which case why does it matter where you enter your password because you're online so much of the time you never have to type it.

On topic, Steam SK accounts authenticate through steam, so unless you're a Petater/SpiralSpy/TheCriderMan and can find out how to manually enter credentials, you're stuck with not being able to play. Achievements are carried, as are the hours displayed below your knight at knight selection. Steam's hour count however does not differentiate between SK accounts, as it just sees a game as a game, so the hours on Steam hour count will not change.

@Bopp without steam connected, someone could just login to your web account if they knew the password and fiddle with your account, all without needing to get through steam or your email, but of course it is secure logging in with a web account, and of course secure passwords can overrule the safety issue, steam simply just offers a bit more protection when you stretch it out on the table with all those features.

You're saying that someone could log into my web account by knowing my username and password.

Couldn't someone log into my Steam account by knowing my Steam name and password? How is it different?

~Close enough when you mention that, I know enough to stand my ground especially against DDoS Ametuers, they DDoS something and act like they achieved the impossibru. Even a Virtual private Network client is enough to keep them away, even if downstream speeds tend to throttle when using it. (That and Rotating an IP is easier than microwaving a plate of Pizza Rolls.)

Steam Guard. Althoug this can be bypassed if the hacker is using a computer you previously used or has access to your email account.

If steamguard is active which is a usual case, they can login to your steam, but the differing IP adress that is not yet verified via email since it is not you and lack of a verification code will lock up the account and disable all community features, thus preventing trading and logging into certain game accounts, which all in all provides a "shield" that will stay up until you reclaim your account and change the password after verifying that it is your account. This can also happen if your logged onto two different computers or networks with different Desktop clients, testing this my account locked up when I didn't verify the secondary location, thus forcing me to contact support about it. Just many safety measures, make you think it's Windows Vista's UAC Ghost.

you get steamtrading... what

you get steamtrading... what more do you want :)

(otherwise just create a steam knight and see if you want to convert your main?) you can trade ingame between your main and steam and then trade stuff with steam

(traded a lot of TF2 things)

You are experiencing a PICNIC ERROR!

I don't know how many people have answered Pathera's questions, but I'll just answer them all anyway.

~first off I would like to know If steam servers are down for maintenance or technical issues, would I still be able to log in the spiral knights servers?
If you are running Steam in offline mode, you cannot log into Spiral Knights. (Unrelated, but you can set your friend status to 'offline' if you don't want to have your Steam friends PMing you.)

~Not that this is too important, but will my achievements move on over or my hours? (Although I doubt my stats wouldn't carry over)
Your achievements will carry over. Your in game hours stay. The Steam statistics are fresh. (Meaning you can still see your playtime at the character selection.)

~And of course if i have a steam knight, would I be asked if I want to replace those player slots with the account I'm converting?
Assuming you have 3 or less knights total, no knights get deleted.

On security...
You're probably right, but I have no statistics to back you up.

Other notes
Be aware that you cannot log into your Steam account on Linux at this time. This might not matter for you, but I'm just letting you know.

Other unlisted benefits that you might not know about:

  • You can join friends directly in Spiral Knights via your Steam friends list. (Right click on friend >> Join Game...)
  • You can trade unbound items via Steam trading.
  • You can voice chat. (Though voice chat is cruddy.)
  • You can invite people on Steam to get the Steam Mask.
  • Steam will attempt to auto-update Spiral Knights, but SK's patcher will still validate. (Takes long on Windows XP, 7, and 8 unless you have a fast computer.)

Despite being told not to switch, I did it anyway. I'm glad I did.
~Cheers!

That also clarifies the picture more for me, and thank you for that Linux note, I wasn't aware, I several Operating systems, and Ubuntu is one of them, although considering Linux counts as steam OS, there's not much compatibility for me to like using steam with Linux, especially since The OpenGL versions of valve games seem to run worst than a better optimized Directx 11.2 software (Team Fortress 2:Windows 8.1 60 fps max settings/Ubuntu Latest Framerate fluctuations between 5 fps to 43), maybe it's just me but my system specs are solid, and windows just does the job better for now until they tweak their OS/OpenGL optimization a bit better, or maybe I was using crummy drivers, either way, going back on point, you also clarified some other benefits I had forgotten about, especially voice chat, which I know is integrated, not perfect but does the job better than typing out to the person mid battle. and that steam mask now that sounds lovely bonus considering its the one thing I never gotten my hands on. Yes, that validating process is annoying and I am still unaware why it uses a lot of resources to do so.

Ah, glad I mentioned Linux then. Sorry to hear that you have problems running stuff on Linux. (By the way, what GFX card do you use? I have Nvidia in both my computers, and I've had most things run pretty well.)

Also, I just checked, and you have to invite 5 players, and all of them have to get to Haven, for you to get the Steam mask.

Other than that, may the...energy? Yeah, may the energy be with you. :P

~I Use a Typical mid ranger, Asus Radeon 6670 2GB, which in itself runs stuff good on directx, maybe ATI Cards don't run OpenGL as good? Lately NVIDIA has been taking the spotlight and I'm super fond of FXAA, I'd probably consider a high-end GTX Series for my next custom Build.

~Looks like I'm going to have to force some friends to get to haven :P they'll hate me but it will be worth it, LOL.
