Sometimes in forums (generally in suggestions) someone will say something and you want to reply but it is irrelevant to the thread. (My point on this being Blazeshot backed up my reply to "Deleted-Knight"'s post and it'd be cool if I could say "Thanks"). PM'ing doesn't seem that complicated of a thing to introduce and it doesn't really have any downsides. The only real problem is possible spam and this could be overcome by friend requests and blocking and so forth.
Forums PM
"Three Rings does not currently have a web developer" - I honestly knew this would be the response given.
My response to this would be; if people make suggestions for them to improve forums and they read enough of them then maybe they'll try harder to bring in someone to work on forums.
In the meantime a suggestion is a suggestion. If they can't bring someone in to implement it then it may be a suggestion wasted. Still best to suggest it in the first place just in-case something happens (a new developer is hired for example).
First someone has to apply to Three Rings to be their web designer. Then they have to be worthy of that position. Then they have to start implementing forum features.
That process could take up to like, 6 months. In fact, Three Rings has been searching for a new web developer for well over a year now. This suggestion isn't new, that's why you get a cookie-cutter response from forumers who have been active for a long while.
Suggesting "PMs via the forums" is a good suggestion. I'd like it, and I'm sure others would too. However, we don't have it, and don't have the means of getting it at this time.
Plus you kind of set yourself up for any responses like my own by saying "PMing doesn't seem complicated" when getting to the point where we can have PMs and then make a working system is anything but simple.
PM system is good. Friends system on forums, not so good. Unless you weren't meaning a friends list on the forums, and were talking about in-game, in which case it still doesn't really stand because not too many forumers get harassed by other forumers in-game unless we so happen to run into each other in Haven.
And by harass I mean hug or stare at from afar.
The friends list wasn't a necessary part of it. It was kinda to stop spam but blocking would be easier I suppose.
In terms of the actual suggestion, it would be a nice feature.
However in actual real-life terms, Three Rings does not currently have a web developer, at least for Spiral Knights. Implementing forum features is sort of... Difficult without one.
A current work-around is that you can send messages via the game client, but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily see it.
