Hey, I'm fairly new to SK. Been playing for about a week and I plan to buy more energy to advance in the game. I've been reading through several threads about weapons/effects etc. I wanted to know what you thought of the following set up. Also, if you could make any suggestions/subsitutions/points about each, I'd appreciate that. My main routine will be to kill and explore as I'm a noob, nothing much else :p

Weapons: Leviathan Blade, *Dread Venom Striker OR Divine Avenger?
Bomb: Nitronome
Armour: Vog Cub set
Shield: Grey Owlite Shield

1. Is this a good setup, why?
2. What does this setup lack, why?
3. How can this setup be improved?
4. Would the Dread Venom Striker OR Divine Avenger work best with the above setup, which one and why?

That's a solid build and there's not anything wrong with it. A lot of people go with the build that you just listed because of the elemental defense and fire resistance for the Tier 3 boss, Lord Vanaduke. But I encourage you to try out some other armor and weapons as well. In addition to Nitronome, you way want to take a look at the Haze Bomb series, but there's nothing wrong with having weapon slots if you want 3+ weapons.

If you only want to craft one set of armor and limited weapons for the sake of saving yourself money, that's completely understandable. The build you listed is definitely the safest choice and you'll be satisfied with it. But consider whether you want to fight with swords, guns, bombs, or a mixture of these weapons. There are a lot of good armor sets out there for a pure swordsman/bomber/gunslinger.

Thanks for the response

Thanks for the response Nova.

Added another question: 4. Would the Dread Venom Striker OR Divine Avenger work best with the above setup, which one and why?

One size does not fit all strata.

It depends on your preferred playstyle and which levels you're playing.

The dread venom striker is a very fast sword with little knockback. The divine avenger is quite slow and has massive knockback. I personally prefer the former. Plenty of others prefer the latter.

Dread venom is better against beasts and gremlins, which resist elemental damage. The divine avenger is better against constructs and undead foes, which are weak to elemental damage. Because of this I'd recommend owning both and considering the makeup of the stratum you're about to enter before deciding which to equip.

Setup & weakness

If you go with the Divine Avenger you will be strong against undead and constructs, weak against beast and gremlins. Right now your setup isn't a specialized setup, meaning you will be able to use all of your weps for any enemy (granted you use the Dread Venom) you feel that you want to. A pure normal setup isn't bad, I personally like people that run that setup, but you aren't maximizing your damage output. (All normal damaging weapons)

Most people that max their damage output would have 1 elemental damaging sword, 1 shadow damaging sword, 1 piercing damaging sword and a gun/bomb. That way you can be doing the best damage against any enemy you are put up against.

To be honest I wouldn't go with a Nitronome unless it is a Very High CTR UV or you are using a bomb set to increase CTR. But I've seen people without a bomb setup or a good UV Nitronome make it work, so to each his/her own.

As for Divine vs Dread, they are really at the opposite ends of the spectrum, a slow elemental damaging weapon with a great charge attack versus a quick normal damaging weapon with a status effect tied to it (and a not-so-good charge in my opinion). If you like to be able to use any weapon against anything then the Dread will be the good winner, plus poison is a nice bonus.

Thanks for the informed responses guys. Considering that I have the levi (normal damage), wouldn't the Divine Avenger be a good backup for elemental damage (undead/construct), switch to levi against beast/gremlins? Also, could you suggest a bomb other than Nitronome with my setup, or should I just scratch it for a third sword (shadow)?

Bomb

Sure, the DA would be nice for dealing with elemental weak enemies while having a Levi for everything else. As for another bomb, if you aren't going to have a bomb set then Haze lines are usually a great support. I personally love the Shivermist since I run Citadel a lot, and hate oilers. But you should see other opinions on all of the bombs before making a definite choice.
