I haven't played in a couple years and I was reading about a gunslinger update. looking to get advice to make the move to a gunslinger set (I currently have 4* sword stuff). I have a gigawatt pulsar and a firodriver already on me, as well as a virulent catalyzer recipe.
Specific questions follow, but all advice for a full set to work towards are welcome.

I read that the blitz needle is the best for the vanaduke fight. Is this also a good gun for regular clockworks levels with piercing damage? or is there another option for the pesky teleporting wolvers in T3?
Is the polaris or the magma driver better for eleental damage gun?
which general purpose shadow gun should I get?
Iron Slug seems like a really good option for a normal gun. any others I should consider?

As for armor, I am thinking of the chaos set for the bonuses, since playing around with my gigawatt pulsar basically lets me stay away and avoid nearly all damage. Is this true with other types of guns or should I consider a different armor set?

Thanks!

All guns in general are pretty bad against wolvers. You can stagger the regular ones with a Callahan though, before it has a chance to teleport, but the Alpha Wolvers remain a huge issue for guns.

Is the polaris or the magma driver better for eleental damage gun?

For damage, probably the Magma Driver, the Polaris is better for utility. Nova Driver is even better, as the damage is upfront instead of over time.

which general purpose shadow gun should I get?

Well, the Blaster series is probably the best for general purpose, so I'd reccomend the Phantasmos. However, the bigger gremlins tend to be pretty dodgy, so you do have to account for that.

Iron Slug seems like a really good option for a normal gun. any others I should consider?

Iron Slug and Volcanic Pepperbox are both pretty good normal damage guns. Valiance almost as much, but it's far cheaper to obtain and doesn't root you to the spot while firing.

Have you read the Gunslinger Guide on the wiki? It's not great, but it might help you get some of the basic questions out of the way.

Yes, Blitz is great against Vanaduke, although many guns work. I agree with Hexzyle about Callahan versus wolvers. But wolvers are rarely a serious threat to your survival. So go ahead and use Blitz on them. It works, once you understand their AI. It just might be a little slow and tedious.

In elemental guns I'd recommend Nova Driver or Storm Driver, though Magma Driver is also fine. Alchemers have very high damage output, once you master the ricochets. They are also fun to use. Polaris/Wildfire is really about crowd control, not damage output. Arcana is boring but reliable. Argent is very boring but reliable. Omega Tortofist is interesting but maybe not for a beginner/returner.

In shadow guns I'd recommend Umbra Driver, Grim Repeater, or Winter Grave. Like the guns above, Phantasmos and Sentenza/Obsidian are boring but reliable, and Biohazard is interesting but maybe not for a beginner/returner.

If you're carrying two non-normal damage types, then you don't need any normal weapons at all. That said, Iron Slug is now a very powerful gun against all monsters. The regular attacks are mediocre, but the charge is devastating. Volcanic Pepperbox is also powerful, but consider Blitz and Grim instead.

In armor Chaos is an excellent choice, although pulsars are not the ideal guns for it, because they are not charge-centric or damage-centric. If you want a really powerful and fun gun play style, consider pairing Chaos with charge-oriented guns (alchemers, magnuses, autoguns) of various damage types (piercing, elemental, shadow). You might also read my armor guide, especially the gunner section.

Wolvers tend to be hard for gunners who aim where the wolvers are rather than where they will be. You can use the new Magnus Charges in a wolver fight all you must do is wait for a Wolver to commit to a bite before firing. You also must keep in mind that most teleporting wolvers commit to a bite as soon as they pop up meaning you have an opportunity to attack.

Polaris is better for controlling enemies but with the hit and miss knockback it is a bit random, try not to use it in teams but rather when you go solo. Magma driver is a great gun for spreading the damage. Much like what Hex said it is proven that status variants of weapons have lower DPS vs single targets. The Nova Driver is great for KOing individuals with that charge attack but the Magma driver falls under a category I call "Fire and forget", basically a weapon that you attack with to status a monster and then ignore while it is statused to focus on another enemy without that status. Basically try to set all the enemies on fire at once rather than pounding away at them one by one.

Phantasmos is great for gremlins and other monsters, the knockback is useful and the bullets are fast. If it isn't your style you can always try out the Tundrus line.

The Supernova is a good gun for crowd control, it is useable in many situations and it doesn't have a status to hinder knockback, still it should be used when playing solo.

Useful comments

Thanks or all the replies. I think I'm going to go with

Nova Driver, Grip Repeater, Blitz needle and Iron slug first.

@Bopp, I read the gunslinger guide but it looked more like an overview rather than a guide, so it still left me with questions. The normal gun is for when I go with a specific damage sword for the level and run a gun on the side.

Later on I might get a callahan, for now I'll take a sword against wolvers. The perfect mask of seerus to keep the maximum CTR on all level 10 guns and have some good resistances for FSC.

good

Nova Driver, Grim Repeater, Blitz Needle, and Iron Slug are great choices, and they go well together.

Even when you play with one sword and one gun, you still don't need a normal gun. You might want to check out the Mixing Weapon Types section of my detailed sword guide. That said, Iron Slug is a great gun, so don't let me stop you from getting it. I just want you to get it for the right reasons.

And maybe get Iron Slug after the others. Nowadays we have these things called Radiant Fire Crystals, which are required for heating 5-star items. And 5-star weapons don't do as much damage as their 4-star versions until they reach heat level 7 or 8. So you don't want to upgrade a weapon until you have a fair number of Radiants saved up.

If you're gunning, learning how to weapon switch ( single and double ) helps your damage output a lot. Nova driver would probably be your constant damage with double switching while charging the others.

Here's a guide for double/single switching http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=315770961 You can read the whole thing or just watch the video at the beginning.
