So, I've been playing Spiral Knights for quite a bit now, all the way to Rank 7-3 with 4* Skelly Suit and Helmet. After asking my guild if I made the right decision, they disagreed with me, and now I've grown worried that it may be too late to turn around and fix this gear choice.

After thinking for a bit how the gear works, I couldn't come up with anything. I know that some gear attunes toward certain playstyles, like the bomber suit providing bonuses for bombs. But what about the defenses? For example, Wolver gear has piercing protection, but so does Jelly Suit gear. I don't know where to go with this one, and if anybody can help me, that would be nice.

._.

Your armor isn't an issue... Poison and Freeze resists are nice to have. The only issue is that it isn't as offensive as it could be if you got conventional armors.
Dread Skelly is fine to have because most of the harder enemies deal shadow damage.

Please, move the thread to Arsenal subforum. Bopp is always there and give good suggestions.

For while, I can say that Offensive > Status protection > Defense, because often you are trying to avoid damage and defeat the enemies, so offensive stats is more important.
About Wolver and Jelly gear: Wolver is better because it offers offensive stats and, on the same time, the same defense. Freeze resistance is more helpful, because it's make more vulnerable than Stun resistance. The Jelly' Sleep resistance is useless because no monster inflict sleep.

EDIT: Ninja'd

always there

Dread Skelly is not bad armor. But this game tends to favor armors that offer offensive bonuses. To learn more, you might read my armor guide. While you're thinking about armor, you might also tell us what mix of weapons (sword, gun, bomb) you use. That determines a lot about what armor is best for you.

There's good news and bad news for you. Let's kick off with the bad. This game, as others have mentioned, favors offensive boosts instead of defensive boosts. What makes this worse is that the offensive sets have enough defense that the added defense from other sets are negligible. Health boosts have a bigger impact on your defense as opposed to Skelly vs. Snarbolax. Additionally, many end-game players view those who use most non-offensive sets as a liability, as they'll think your damage output is negligible compared to the health increase mobs get.

On the plus side, since your set is going to lack offensive boosts, you can mold your playstyle around this. When you are at an objective disadvantage, the best solution is to learn how to play smarter, not harder. Think of playing lower tier characters against higher tier characters in fighting games; it's all in technique and finesse. Learn the patterns of enemies, observe the ins-and-outs of their timing, and just learn how to play better to compensate for the fact that your set doesn't allow you to easily "mash buttons and win". And when you reach the endgame in your gear, you will gain the experience you need to obtain more powerful gear without much trouble if you desire.

I started the game off rushing the Vog Cub Set and a Swiftstrike Buckler, but immediately found other gear to be more effective for my "Jack of all Trades" playstyle. (And then Chaos got buffed and I never had to worry about gear ever again, because who needs balance)

Hello again

Skelly is a nice set to have especially since many of the events in Spiral Knights have Shadow Damage or Freeze/Poison Status.
Dark Harvest with Shadow damage.
Kataclysmic Confrontation Shadow damage as well as Freeze and Poison being common statuses in the prestige mission.
March of the Tortodrones where you must farm materials off of Fiends and do battle with Tortodrones that have support from Fiend monsters.
Shroud of Apocrea which has Shadow Freeze and Poison monsters on it's Grasping Plateau floors.
Winterfest which invariably features Elemental and Shadow monsters with Freeze status.

Having damage boosting armors isn't necessary to be a good player, the first 5 star set I had was Mercurial Mail but the lack of damage, appropriate defense, or status didn't keep me from being successful at running missions like FSC.
