As a serious answer- it came from a game called Underwhirled Drift which also featured a devilite and something called the pit brute that didn't quite make it into Spiral Knights. All three would presumably come from/have to do with the underworld/underwhirled.
Aside from that, I'm not sure there really is any more lore to them. The skull model comes form the phantom, but it could just be them reusing it because they can.

Ah Whirled, I remember when that game was popular.
When there were actually new games being released and the front page didn't have the same junk on there all the time (and what was the hype with Bang Heroes! and Corpsecraft anyway?)
And trolling people with video avatars was the best.
OT: Because the soul jelly was so small, he was mistreated by his lichen brethren. He was tossed aside, where he then reflected upon his life and became a "good" lichen by becoming friendly by not attacking stray knights and developed a soul, hence the name. Regular lichens have no souls.

Oh, I played the game and it had more-
Soul Jelly: "When the wicked are banished to the underwhirled, they are given the form of a soul jelly. It is a simple, no bake process that takes about an hour. Just how they manage to operate a vehicle is a total mystery."
So soul jellys are people that have been condemned to eternal torment. That's actually kind of.. frightening.
As a plus- the pit brute eats them.
Pit Brute: "One of the biggest fiends that roam the underwhirled, pit brutes spend most of their time filling their seemingly bottomless stomachs. They greatly enjoy a breakfast of soul jellies on toast."
