it showed the slime arena, but instead took me to the Slimeway. Strangely, the gate map showed the correct level.

The next level is set as the last knight steps onto the elevator.. SO if the icon at the elevator changes at the last second, you might just have missed the level it changed to.
I've noticed that sometimes if the level changes after stepping onto the elevator it won't change the picture above it.
