are shard bombs good for lockdown?

I know vaporizers are the most popular bombs for LD, but i was wondering if shard bombs are good for lockdown because I've never seen anyone use them, if it is then what is the best strategy for using shard bombs with recons? (BTW I use heavy dark matter bomb)

No. If you haven't seen a certain weapon in LD there's a reason why. No bombs other than hazes are very good for LD. Dark Briar Barrage and Nitronome can be used but they aren't good because good players know how to counter them well as they're essentially like hazes except they only provide momentary area denial, meaning that people can either run in, hit you, and get out, or go in, tank a hit, and keep your charge down so that you aren't able to place another bomb.

Shards are....... more of a Niche weapon.
The 2 Status Variants are the only ones I would recommend for LD. AND ONLY when you encounter foes who can walk through your Shock and Stun Haze Bombs. The Shards can inflict moderate statuses which are superior to weak ones on the Haze Bomb. You should also pair them with weapons to take advantage of that status or stick with teammates who can. Well placed Shards can make chokepoints more dangerous and can disrupt battles. They should be used carefully and with the understanding that their use is limited to moderately tight spaces. You won't be going for damage either since shards are weak but you can still support your team if you know how.
A long time ago shard bombs were actually potent weapons in LD but their mechanics got changed because OOO didn't want a Bomb/Gun..... even though they later created Tortofists which are Gun/Bombs basically.

even though they later created Tortofists which are Gun/Bombs basically.
Don't forget the melee hit part!

"...they never said it was too gunlike. They specifically said it was "not bomblike enough". Players just assumed they meant that it was the "gun" aspect, but considering the fact that we have several "mixed" weapons and they went on to release DR which is the farthest thing one can imagine from a bomb, it leads to the conclusion that the problem wasn't in the range aspect. The problem was in the fact that a bomb, that's designed for aoe and group kills, was being used primarily to spike ohko targets. Experienced bombers didn't use RSS to clear crowds as much as they just used it to spike targets dead in an instant. It was a lot faster, easier and safer.
Which is explicitly not bomb-like..."

Anyone in real military service can tell you that explosives are indeed OHKO weapons.....
If you (or a monster) decided to jump on a grenade (Gen 1 shard bomb) you will die...
Edit: If not OHKO they are still terribly powerful and dangerous

Yes, because SK is a high quality and very detailed battlefield simulator. I mean, what modern military doesn't use swords shaped like tuning forks with glowly lights?

IDK if blitz needle or the tortofists are very gunlike though. I mean you could use the old sun shards to strafe and do area damage just like you can use the current blitz needle/tortofists to strafe about and get in quick shots... people just don't most of the time because that's just not how those weapons are typically used.
Being able to hit with all of those shards was a blessing for bombers, who suffer greatly when dealing with the plethora of meaningless small encounters that the knight must fight through. Sword/gun users trivialize those small encounters, while bombers are really only useful against tons of enemies.

Regardless I think they would still be balanced. You can either kill enemies one by one or all about the same time. They could have easily fixed the old shards by putting invicitinks on them or by making them fire off the shards in a clockwork pattern rather than all at once.
Better yet lets take the Shardbomb argument to the rest of the OHKO weapons and see what happens....

I began experimenting with status Shards (Ionized Salt Bomb = moderate Shock) and just received my Radiant Sun Shards (moderate Stun). I have a topped very high CTR with my Recon's CTR med + a level 10 CTR med buff, totalling to CTR very high. Now let me say this: status shard bombs are very good when spamming, but it has various weaknesses! Fausts and Avengers, many handguns especially the Valiance line, Antigua line, and Pulsar line are weapons that shard bombers will have trouble with the most. You have to become very very skilled at avoiding those weapons, or else you will end up nowhere.
You'll need CTR max. Trust me on this! I currently am equipped with CTR very high, though I'm thinking of making bombing gear to get the CTR max. CTR max is a huge difference than CTR very high.
Also, don't bother getting 5* shards. They are nearly the same as the 4* variants.
Nevertheless, shard bombs, if used expertly and proficiently, are super fun to handle. If your enemies are all stunned or shocked, you are at a greater advantage to completely defeat your opponents.
I would like to note that it is best to double wield the stun shards (Radiant Sun Shards) and the shock Shards (Ionized Salt Bomb), because it is virtually impossible to have medium resistance to both stun and shock since there is NO armor in Spiral Knights with both stun and shock resistance!!! Even with Max UVs, you will never have total medium resistance against both medium stun and shock.

Because the above guy promoted Four Stars over Five Stars and I must like.
Shard Bombs are a complex weapon to use effectively in Lockdown. As the above post said, CTR Max is a necessity, but Damage Max would also be great as persistent players would actually be killed. You can play with Shard Bombs, but they require even more skill to use than virtually every other weapon in Lockdown. Do not go around and expect 10k every time if you are experienced. Rather, it is a great distraction and is very useful tactically.
Yes, I have seen a player use such bombs (Shocking Salt Bomb) and create a good distraction.
Oh, and they can cause heavy lag. A double-edged sword, really.

So basicly the RSS and SSB are the only useful shard bombs to play with in LD?

Let me rephrase that
"Yes but even then they aren't very powerful or easy to use"
They can be quite useful...... if you are good and your goal is to WIN the match....
If your goal is to get high damage numbers you can forget that

In my opinion, something isn't useful if it isn't viable for high level GLD play but I suppose they may be better than I give them credit for.

They can be a pain when applied in the right spots. As I mentioned earlier they're best used in moderately narrow chokepoints where they can cluster up against the walls and make missteps hazardous for the enemy team

The only bombs that "last a longer time" are Dark Retribution, Shard bombs, Vortex, and Mist.
Dark Retribution is like Shard bombs' way of cancelling enemy attacks, but on steroids for Lockdown. The issue is the Dark Retribution has no status effects associated with it.
Shard bombs often times cancel enemy attacks, but it's even better when the Shards inflict a shock or stun status. They work as excellent stalling tools. If you're able to, all by yourself, stall half of the enemy team on one node, then you're doing a crazy good job, because the rest of your team is now at a better advantage.
Vortex bombs are surprisingly good when used with a strong heavy weapon. I would recommend using a Rocket Hammer to enemies inside your Vortex. Electron Vortex also induces strong shock status.
Mist bombs are undoubtedly the most overused bomb in Lockdown. Out of the 4 long-lasting bombs, the Mist bombs are at the highest radius. This could give Mist bombs OP status. The downfall is that Mist bombs are easily resistable, and deal very weak base damage. The Voltaic Tempest (shock) Mist bomb is most oftenly used.
I don't know, but while you wait for someone to chime in, here are some threads to read. Good luck.
