I am expiriencing a massive fps drop whenever I am on a depth that has particle effects. IE/ Snow levels with snow falling in the foreground, Plazmodium with fog in the foreground etc.. The Fps goes from 40 to 5-7. almost unplayable, and vanaduke runs are out of the question because of the foreground effects in cit.

My fps is rock solid in any level where these effects are not present. My wife, who plays SK beside me on a much older and less powerful computer does not have this issue, and actually gets better performance at a higher res. I have tried adjusting every possible option to no effect.

My specs:

Particle FPS drop

I get this too, i have 40fps+ when standing in a particle-free zone, but as soon as a effect comes on screen like fire, or a spotlight etc. my fps drops to roughly 5fps.

Any ideas why particle FX cause so much lag?

In the General Options Menu

In the General Options Menu you can toggle Graphics Quality to something lower. As far as I know, at some point that toggle will remove the snow effects. There are some other performance issues suggestions here: http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Performance_issues_FAQ

Edit: The FAQ also has a section on ATI cards & "stuttering" which may help the OP.

equinox, thanks for the

equinox, thanks for the answer!

But I played half-life 2, portal and other "heavy" games without any lags at 1280x800 with max settings (except anti-aliasing)

in spiral knights: whatever setting I choosed - I have lags (fps falls down to 4-5) only then something smoked or blows up, or when too much robots on screen (I think because they are smoking to).

I really like this game. I think this is the first game in the last three years, which I really like to play in spare time.

Just asked other players in game about this lags, and many of them have it too.
I think it would be great to have in additional options possibility to turn Particle Effects off, or made some restriction (like in old valve games for expample).

sorry for bad english.
