Going in with a Gran Faust and Barbarous Thorn Blade

So I always hear that if you want to go into the clockworks with two swords ALWAYS have a sword that does normal damage, but if you have a combination like mentioned in the title, wouldn't that cover everything at least neutrally? For instance the Gran Faust can be used for Slimes and Gremlins while being neutral against Beasts and Constructs, effectively covering the Slime and Construct weakness of a Thorn Blade. Obviously this isn't the only combo that can do this but my question remains the same, why is normal damage so essential?

Normal damage isn't

Normal damage isn't essential.

That combination can / will work as you stated.

normal damage isnt needed,

normal damage isnt needed, lol. when i go into dungeons (and am too stingy to pay 250 for a slot upgrade), i use Faust/Avenger combo, (Faust/AoA for Jelly King). what a normal weapon is for, such as the Calibur or Cutter lines, is that for a normal weapon, they do amazingly high damage and are useful in a variety of situations. cutters are extremely good for chasing down fast enemies, as well as shield blocking during a combo. high end calibur lines are good for high instantaneous damage, which is why you see many, i assume, Leviathan Blades, and not AS many Cold Iron Vanquishers - people tend to only take those out during Graveyard or Vanaduke runs due to the "very high" native buff against undead.

Normal damage isn't essential

Normal damage isn't essential if you can cover your deficiencies. Like running a faust/gun would be a bad idea. In that case you would want a normal damage sword. If you have at least 2 swords of different types then you're fine since you'll always be hitting for "normal" damage with one of them no matter what you face.
