What's the best armor defensively?

I was just wondering, seeing as I need some good defensive armor.. I was thinking that it'd be the Volcanic/Ironmight set, but those have an attack speed reduction, so... those aren't very appealing. :U

Of the three Plate lines I feel like Volcanic is the most useful, Ironmight the second most, and Ancient the least. In terms of pure defense, that is. Volcanic gives you protection from one of the more common (if not the single most common) type of damage and will protect you from Fire. Ironmight will protect you from piercing, which isn't really all the common. Maybe good for Royal Jelly runs? Ancient gives, at a glance, the standard Plate normal defense with additional health granted on top of its sister sets.
The problem with defense is that there are four different kinds to take into account: normal, piercing, elemental, and shadow. There are sets that excel in all those damage types, but I don't know of one that is great against them all. I've always been a proponent of being prepared for different stratums with different sets of armor for each one.
I've been working up to volcanic. I hardly notice the attack damage reduction at all. Of all things it makes fast weapons easier to manage.
