I've heard that you can start a gate from the clockwork terminal, how do you do that?

yes.
You can join a random party or join a friend who is at terminal, but you won't be able to buy any 2-5* recipes. However, you do get to skip out on a lot of the boring stuff leading up to the stratum you were going for.
Join a friend who is at your desired Clockwork Terminal. You can then accompany him/her or go solo as desired.
