Don't see anyway to embed an image so a link will have to do: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gVdis8bYMEI/TmVDsE6yqTI/AAAAAAAANjk/m...

Not sure where to go from here.

The fonts are corrupted or

The fonts are corrupted or missing. SK includes arial TT fonts as part of the install (/spiral knights/rsrc/ui/font/), and will use it first if available. Otherwise it'll attempt to fall back on the system default fonts through the JVM settings.

Could also be a fault with the video card drivers, but I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting that in Linux. You could try changing the Catalyst AI settings to Standard or whatever its new default name is... its been known to unweird the card's behavior with OpenGL.

okay. the Ariel fonts have the same file sizes as the same fonts under a Steam/Windows install. The font files do not appear to be corrupted.

Catalyst AI was already set on Standard to begin with.

Any other ideas?

If it where windows, I'd say

If it where windows, I'd say try updating the drivers. I would also check the projectx.log in the SK folder to see if its reporting anything. Also, are you running it under the JDK/JRE or a the default JRE to run the game?

Beyond that, theres not much consistency with ATI drivers and OpenGL, and that leaves me tapped for ideas since I only have limited working knowledge in Linux.

there's been a bug introduced

there's been a bug introduced in the 11.5 series driver that causes the mouse to hang in the lower right corner of the desktop. As of 11.8 the bug does not yet appear to have been addressed: http://phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?57977-Sampling-info-about-that...

My install log has the following:

Do you agree to the above license terms? [yes or no]
yes

Which Java Virtual Machine would you like to use?
Note: the JVM must be version 1.5.0 or newer.
[/usr]

Where would you like to install spiral?
[/home/Zerias/spiral]

I guess my next step would try to be and force it to use Oracle Java instead of OpenJDK.

Some good news. I grabbed

Some good news. I grabbed Oracle-Java through apt and pointed the /home/(username)/spiral/java symbolic folder link to the /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26 location.

This is the result: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BMwLSnKirZE/TmWCiFihQZI/AAAAAAAANj4/q...

The text is now rendering properly, but I now have a different problem on hand. I am unable to actually log into the game as either a guest or using the same account I am using for forum access... much less my pre-existing Steam account.

My projectx log now reads:

oh yeah, this might help too

looking back through the spiral directory I noticed the file hs_err_pid9178.log

This appears to be a crash file generated for the OpenJDK crash. The contents of that crash log have been posted if Three Rings needs it:

I have some problem

I install Debian Linux (lastest version), ATI drivers (non-free).
I am install Spiral Knights for Linux (later i play for windows, but now i have no Windows).
I have no see all of symbols (like a screen at first post).
I try to copy all of windows fonts to folder "(/spiral knights/rsrc/ui/font/)", but it is not helped me :(
And more... in some levels (like levels before boss "wolf") - game played 3-5 seconds, and stops 1-2 seconds (while game stops - my char may be still run forward all of this time and appeared on spikes, or in fire, etc...). Install Oracle JRE and configure Spiral Knights so it uses that one instead of OpenJDK.

Looks like a routing issue popped up with the oracle JRE.

Any idea how I can fix or address this routing issue?

I have no idea what may be causing that. Do you have a windows partition or another computer in your house you can try SK on?

I appreciate that you don't assume that I have a Windows install handy, I wish more people would do that.

Anyways, yes, a Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System is also installed on this computer, and SK connects perfectly fine when running under Windows.

no, I am unable to do ping that IP address from either Windows or Linux. However, Windows is still able to connect, at least through Steam, even though that address is unreachable.

heard back from support by

heard back from support by email. They are looking into the problem and asked some other questions. Figured I'd toss up my response.

Okay, first question, software-firewall.

I don't have any software firewalls installed, and IPtables has no set rules:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ipqMhSC3gfE/TmjVZpsratI/AAAAAAAANkM/X...

Second question: Java Versions

I have two currently installed versions of Java, Oracle-Java and OpenJDK.

My current version of OpenJDK is listed in the repositories as 6b18-1.8.7-2~squeeze1: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=openjdk-6-jdk&searchon=names&...

My current version of Oracle-Java is listed in the repositories as 6.26-0squeeze1 http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=sun-java6-jdk&searchon=names&...

I went ahead and upgraded Oracle-Java to Sid's 6.26-3 version. Same connection error.

Out of morbid curiosity I decided to try JDK-7 modifying the instructions from: http://www.java7developer.com/blog/?p=55

Instead of putting Java in /opt, I put it in /usr/lib with my Java-6 versions.

Under JDK-7... the problem worsened. With JDK-6 I at least got a rendered window and the login screen. With JDK-7 I get... nothing. A simple crash out.

ProjectX and Launcher log files: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lMUxodq6ayKTlkXpgx4IDv49D98jZ3pgFDFg...

32bit JDK / 64bit JDK?

While dropping by java.com I noticed a particular disclaimer on the Java-Linux download page: Please use the 32-bit version for Java applet and Java Web Start support.

I stopped using I386 several years ago and the thought occurs to me that the use of x86-64 might actually be a problem at hand.

So I yanked the 32-bit JDK-7 version while I was at it and results were the same as the 64bit JDK-7. No rendered window.

Theres a known issue with

Theres a known issue with JRE7-64bit having problems with dynamic library links because of something in the package. ldconfig can repair them partially, but theres still another bug in JLWGL that hates on JRE7, and OOO will need to address before it'll work.

Now what you should do is check the IP address in the projectx.log for the windows and compare it against the linux projectx.log.

Now back to the the network error... I meant to say traceroute in the last post (brain farted), and was intending to see if there was a blackhole in the routing before it hits the internet.

anyways, update. The problem seemed to be with Java's default settings. In most installs Java defaults to the same setting as under windows: use browser settings. At least on my machine this needed to be changed.

Step 1: Set Java to use a Direct Connection:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4yzI_w0K9ZI/ToOb8NaVB_I/AAAAAAAANlc/u...

Step 2: Make sure the java control panel has all of the java machines installed listed:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sWk3n8BJf1M/ToOb_AU5igI/AAAAAAAANlg/U...

Step 3: Reboot with new settings.

Step 4: At this point I just did a new install of Spiral Knights and pointed at /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26/

The only real problem now is that I apparently can't login to the game (or the forums or anywhere else for that matter) with my Steam ID. I suspect this will require Steam's binary Linux client, but since they haven't been too forthcoming on when they'll be finished with that... not really anything anybody here can do about it.

You need a Steam client to play the game using a steam account. But you can post on the forums through your steam account using the "Login with Steam" link above the login fields. That'll take you to the steam community site, login there using your Steam name, and redirect you to the site using your Steam credentials.

Star: wasn't working last night. Last night Steam's community site kept trying to launch the Steam Binary Client. Went back to take screen-shots of Firefox and Chrome trying to launch Steam, but didn't get the attempt to launch this go-around.

All you can do is create a common SK account, unbind all your stuff in your old account and transfer it to the new one. You could even delete your character in your steam account for being able to create another one with the same name. Maybe you could contact support and convince them to remove the unbinding costs for this situation?

Also, could you mark the thread as RESOLVED?

Luft: yes, I could probably

Luft: yes, I could probably convince support to do that.

I'd much rather lean on Valve to stop sitting on their rear ends and get the Steam Linux client out of Beta.

I'd also much rather other publishers and developers lean on Valve as well.
