there was a pressure plate and I was trying to put a vase down on it but I could only throw it.
How do you put a vase down?

Yeah, only statues can sit on pressure plates.
Vases are used for hitting switches, blocks or monsters.
Was the statue missing or something? If so you should report that.
You can only throw vases, for pressure plates you usually need a statue.
