I doubt the devs even read this board, so I'm probably talking to a wall, but...

Everyone keeps saying that the elevator fee comes up and punches new players in the balls, stopping them from playing just as they're having fun. Hell, I know for a fact that if my buddy hadn't kept me going after my mist was down I'd have not bothered with this game.

So, why not just make the elevator fee optional?

"Optional? Ehwot? No one would opt to pay," I hear you say. Well, they would if you could only collect heat/crowns/mats/tokens if you had paid the fee. Yes, let us continue to play the game, but not be able to profit from it.

This'd allow newbies to actually keep playing the game with friends/hone their skills and would stop people suddenly getting kicked back to Haven 'cuz they let their energy deplete. Friends who are out of energy can still tag along on a run, or join you while you're farming for mats and not have to worry about them getting the good drop.

[strike]There could be an option at any time to pay the 10 energy and start collecting cr/heat from that point 'til the next elevator (no retroactivity). That way, if you do get caught short you can descend, buy some energy, then opt in.[/strike] (A shame strike isn't allowed)

Nevermind. Once ya opt out, you're out for the rest of the run.

Sure, you'd have to have the tutorial actually expound on how energy works so people don't feel like they're wasting time if they only play to make progress rather than fun (Yes, this is for those of us who play games for fun. Remember fun? That thing games used to be all about, instead of work? But I digress). There are probably other issues I haven't seen yet.

This little idea is far from fleshed out, so now I need you guys to pick it apart/direct me to where this idea has already been brought up (if it has been). Bring on the criticism.

Step 1: Grind/buy a nice

Step 1: Grind/buy a nice all-purpose endgame loadout
Step 2: Play all day, never paying elevator fees again
Step 3: No Profit! (for OOO)

I seem to recall that you get a mist tank after reaching Haven for the first time, so tacked onto the initial 100 mist that's a good 4 hours of gameplay your first day (Assuming you avoid the noob trap of spamming energy revives. There should probably be a little PSA notice for the noobs to go easy on them).

Yeah, you do kind of seem to

Yeah, you do kind of seem to be missing the part where the publisher is trying to make money. They don't actually have an incentive to offer unlimited free play, that just encourages people to place load on their servers without interacting with the economy that makes them profits.

Furthermore, if you're playing on crystal energy, many levels give you less money for clearing them than they cost to enter, and are effectively speedbumps on the way to the later levels. Players would routinely skip the fee on the less rewarding levels (basically everything in odd strata except arenas and maybe graveyards) in order to get to the more rewarding levels further on. So this would seriously screw with the economy, even if most players weren't interested in your intended use.

There are also rare drops in various levels that can individually be worth more than the entire level they drop on (e.g. most 5-star crafting materials in stratum 5), so this could further be abused to wait until one drops and then pay 10 energy before picking it up.

If you made it so that anyone who skipped a fee was permanently in free mode until returning to Haven, you could at least eliminate the exploits, but see paragraph 1.

Nicoya-Kitty: People already

Nicoya-Kitty: People already do that. You can easily make enough money to afford the energy costs at lower depths, becoming self-sufficient. OOO still lose out. This is mainly to help out newbies stuck in t1 or people that only run with their mist.

Antistone: Oooh, I had totally overlooked that. Gonna edit the main post to take out opting in and making it once ya opt out, you're stuck out for the entire run.

As for the devs making money, they're already working on a f2p platform. You *can* play the game for free, you're just suddenly barred at certain points. I doubt anything is more annoying, or more likely to get new guys to leave. I'd wager that the big money is made by people who've been playing for a while and really take a shine to the game, not people starting out. As such, making it easier to stick around would actually be a great boon.

no they dont... they make enough crowns to buy from the CE market, but even then that CE originated from a player buying CE from OOO.

The instant you said this is for fun...

It caught my eye, because many games seem to lack the fun part, causing the long for oldschool games, which positively stink of gameplay.
Anyway, only choosing to just tag along energyless is good, and also continuing just for the sake of it without energy is also good, but instantly deciding to play 10 energy to just grab some Flame Soul or ohaiimaveryrarematerialyouneedtohave is ridiculously bad. Simply keeping the idea of tagging along and/or playing for fun is great.

Couple of question for you

How would revives work? If you are playing for free and are with a group what is stopping you from reviving as you please and reviving your fallen (CE paying) comrades for free? What would stop me from playing for free, killing everything in sight with my five-star gear just so my less-experienced buddy picks up all the heat, crowns, and loot without having to risk anything?

No, the only way I could see this working is if there was a separate server that hosts a level or two just so noobs can get some practice in. You can't mix the neuvo freeloaders with the normal SK population.

Phew, thought this was

Phew, thought this was another CE troll thread. Not that I suppourt this. Lockdown kinda fills that void, though the fees don't punch new players in the balls that much. My freind got two of his freinds to play, the got to T2 in a couple days.

Why not have that, but with

Why not have that, but with the exception of only having T1 players get that option. Play the T1's for as long as you want, but if you want to keep any of the crowns, mats, minerals, or tokens you get from there, you have to fork up 10 energy.

Once they qualify for T2, it disappears for good, forcing players to either pay, or figure out how to be self-sufficient. That way, newbies can play for as long as they wish, but don't benefit from it, and once they move to T2 status, where a good chunk of the game takes place, they always have to fork up mist, even if they go back to T1.

Edit: revives would still cost energy, however.

The main flaw in this entire

The main flaw in this entire idea is that you become a leech on the system. Even if your aren't collecting rewards, you still consuming server resources and are in no way capable of contributing to the economy via crowns/trades. And thats not even beginning to cover the possible exploits connected to ressing, elevators, anchoring, cherry picking, etc.

I did two vanaduke runs today

I did two vanaduke runs today without a single point of CE being spent. You can get plenty of playtime for free.

Yes, I will admit, starting off is far too slow if you're playing free - but you could easily drop some money for a starter pack. It is hard to justify at first because you don't realize the game is actually good early on, but it is worthwhile.

I'm not really sure about

I'm not really sure about this. It is actually worth the energy to enjoy the game-play in the three tiers along with the tokens, materials, heat and crowns which you can gain from wiping out monsters. If a newbie wants to hone their skills they can do so in the Advanced Training Hall or if they feel like it, they can pay the elevator fee and explore the clockworks fairly. Sorry, I don't agree with this idea. <:|

I wasn't on someone else's tab. I just join people doing basil runs at the terminal then go solo. FSC is exactly 5 floors. Do the math.

Suggestion to help newbies ease into the game, eliminating rage

I think newbies should have a handicap of able to spend 5 CE per elevator. Once they reach tier 2 gear, then the price for elevators will go back to normal.

Then the complaint moves to

Then the complaint moves to elevators being too expensive, and that its a trap to lure you in like a low starting APR.
