Reputation in my opinion would be great if it was integrated into the forums. There are are a couple main reasons why that it would be of help.
1. Trolls
2. Reliable information
I am not suggesting a rep system for the sole purposes of flaunting some high number next to your name or anything along those lines.
What I am suggesting is a system that helps indicate a persons helpfulness reliability and trust in the the community. Browsing the forums I see to often things like this " wE Must a r3volt agnst OOO" "lower this nao!!" "Insert unintelligible wording here". I am not saying I don't think we should have an opinion on how this game is shaped and that OOO shouldn't listen and consider acting on those suggestions and such or that it doesn't bother me when things raise to outrageous prices at times or that I don't make grammar mistakes at times. There are answers for all these though for the first one of course we should have a say and a strong one at that but the forum shouldn't have a high amount of new topics with revolting against OOO, it should be handled in a more respectful manner than freaking out. When good thought and reason are put into a cause they will get noticed and more then likely change. The second yes I would be lying if at times I see things that are way overpriced but again don't freakout if something is unreasonable it most likely won't be used and when stuff isn't being used it goes to waste and nothing good should go to waste. For a current example Shadow keys, silver keys, lock boxes and shadow lairs. That is a lot to go through and risk for one expedition! There are a lot of views on this topic and really its for the crowd and intelligent thought out suggestions that will change it for the better. Onto the third thing I stated, this is a really simple answer no one wants to read a post that risks the chance of their eyes bleeding by the end of it out of sheer concentration on trying to understand whats being said. I am aiming this at posts that look like this, note these are shorter less painful examples "plueZE GIve bacjk teh awsms" "i htes yr ida!". There are exceptions of course such as anyone that is bilingual and has taken the time to learn another language may not be professional spellers in there second language. Along with a few others but I'm saying people that can write understandably please do its very much appreciated by every one. That is my view on the first topic which also falls into the building a stronger community.

Onto the second reason *I promise to make this a bit shorter explanation I apologize if the last one was boring and long :)* it would be really cool to know that when your making that big decision on what next gear to get, or what to spend money on next or maybe if you should craft it instead, that your getting a reliable response. No one wants to be sent down the wrong path and spend a lot of time crowns, heat, CE or time grinding on a bad choice. Although research before hand can really help in making choices there are also personal preferences that some people agree with like two swing vs three swing swords and such. With reputation you would know if unsure that you are getting reliable information. I could go on how this would help but I said I would shorten this one and I want to hear every other views to :p. In a side note, I suggest that there should be a period of time after creating an account that some one can give rep and a frequency of the amount of times a person can give reps a day or week to avoid rep spamming and all that. I hope to hear from the rest of the community and there suggestions :).-Sir_cazm

List of suggestions made for this topic.
1- Mods that make sure everything is taken care of.
2-An awesome rep system that makes people want to use it correctly. (no rep spamming or just down repping for fun)

Everyone, even me, will use it to mob others, because all players hate each other deep within their hearts

And that hate will grow so

And that hate will grow so strong, it can only expressed in circles and stars next to people's names.

I've seen reputation systems

I've seen reputation systems before. They tend not to work because for every person that genuinely uses it the way it was intended you have a bunch more that will down rep someone just because they disagreed with them or because they are fan of using DA/Skolver/Shiv etc or just because they were in a mood that day and decided to down rep whoever caught their attention first. And of course, friends will up rep each other purely because online numbers totally mean everything, not because they actually deserve said rep.

Even if such a system did exist, using it as a basis to determine if what someone has posted is worth considering is a really bad idea.

Just for the sake of

Just for the sake of argument, what about a karma system like slashdot uses? Actually, nevermind, I'm using the concept wrong. Turns out its a community mod tool.

NO NO NO NO NO

In fairness, a reputation system could potentially be fairly useful in-game, but still far too open to abuse to actually be worthwhile. On the forums it'd be an absolute disaster. A thousand disagrees.

Yeah I can see a lot of that happening.

Maybe were not ready for a rep systems haha. Well its an idea that maybe will be of use some day in this community. Hopefully we will have less hating other players deep down later hehe. I would still like to hear any others views on the subject though :).

I don't think reputation will

I don't think reputation will help. I do think having some more moderators around would. I think there should be a community standard for respect and maturity and it should be enforced to a reasonable extent, IMO.

Examples

A great rep system can be found over at stackoverflow.com:
http://stackoverflow.com/faq#reputation

Pretty much, you get 5-15 points when someone votes you up. You loose 2 points when someone votes you down, also they loose 1 point. A good answer far outweighs a poor answer but also you only vote things down that you are very much against since it costs you rep to do so.

Even better, you can't vote things down unless you already have a lot of rep in the community.

While we're at it, is there anyway to make a Meta-game out of it?

I think reputation can be helpful

I think reputation can be helpful ...

  • to guess if an advice someone gives you is well-intentioned or
  • to estimate the probability a transaction or deal with that person may be a good or a bad idea.

So in purely factual forums/threads (i.e. bug reports, suggestions and technical issues) reputation will be a distraction, but in other areas it can be helpful to some degree; as long as it is not abused.
This means if a rep system is implemented, it would be best to separate it from factual forums/threads.
