64-bit Java works great with the Steam version. It's the Steam Overlay that does not work with any 64-bit executable. Disable that and it will work just fine (but kinda negates the purpose of using Steam in the first place). Just take the performance inprovements with a grain of salt, some users see improvements while others see no change.
