I think it would be awesome if some of our enemies could include evil Spiral Knights. They be colored red, and their gear would consist of full sets (i.e., cobalt, calibur, defender). Perhaps the gear sets they have would be determined by stratum. They could face their targets while moving in different directions. They will attempt to dodge player attacks and, failing that, shield right before the attacks hit. They will use full sword combos when they have the opportunity, use charge attacks to break your shield, use a gun when at range, use a gun charge attack against a shielded opponent at range, and use bombs when isolating a player is difficult to do safely (e.g., when the players are in a pack).

These would essentially be boss fights. Ideas or suggestions, anyone?

P.S. Mecha knights aren't nearly smart enough.

The Phantoms prehaps? They

The Phantoms prehaps? They are somewhat knightlike.
Almarian knights would be cool. With some variation of almarian crusader and cobalt, but with the color scheme of the crest of almire. Though having them switch weapons frequently would be annoying, becuase if you fought a pack of them, they would all do the same thing. They need to switch weapons based on their allies as well, not just the opponent movement patterns.

Blackened Almirian Crusaders

The fallen Almirian knights would use a blackened version of the Almirian Crusader armor, the Blackened Crest for a shield, Ascended Calibur swords and Master Blaster guns. Their face color would be the same as Vanaduke's (orange, I think). Every fallen knight would wear the armor that is characteristic of the theme it exists on.

As for A.I., they would indeed switch weapons based on their allies. In fact, perhaps the number of fallen knights would vary with the number of players. For every player in a stratum, there will exist one fallen knight, up to a maximum of 4. They would wander the level in search of players, and would be able to interact with anything that players can, including pickups. They only drop as many pickups as they acquire. A lone knight would favor a sword; additional allies would favor a gun, bomb, and vials, respectively. They all carry one of each weapon type, but like I said, will favor one over others. When made to fight with fewer than 3 in their party, they'll change weapons as the situation dictates, taking their allies' favored weapons into account.

Not quite what I ment. They

Not quite what I ment. They owuld be able to switch weapons, but they wouldn't be single minded. If I'm using my shivermist, my partner will be smart enough to bring out a voltac. If my partener is getting bommbed, I'll be smart enough to assault the bomber with an antigua to prevent him from charging. Etc, etc.

Saboteurs

I think, they should have random player colors and random player gear, so you can easily confuse them with a player that just joined. It would be a surprise sneak attack and everyone would be confused and panic. They shouldn't spawn like other monsters, but instead look like a player while loading (i.e. standing still with no weapons in hand). The only means to detect them before an attack, is by watching player tabs, the aiming cursor, the attack damage type indicator and the mini map. This would be so exciting, funny and horrible. I'd love it.
The background story could be, that they got in contact with some fiendish terrors, lost their mind and now insanely strive the Clockworks, restlessly attacking knights, feeding from the energy of their former comrades.

That... is awesome!

One way or another, I'd like to see player-like enemies in the game. They should be cunning, tough, and otherwise hard to kill. Players will need a good deal more skill to kill these enemies than for most others. They're like us, only evil.

I kind of like Desouler's idea, but I wonder if that would make the game unnecessarily difficult. Maybe it could be a boss stage...
