Is the Azure Guardian set any good (as a general purpose armor)? I've heard a lot of bad things about it.
Azure- Any Good?
Its not so much that Azure is bad, its just that there are way better choices out there if you want Normal/Piercing protection.

Skolver: Normal/Pierce/Freeze Sword DMG+

Justifier: Normal/Piercing/Handgun ASI+

and most any other 5* Normal/Piercing armor comes with added resistance and/or a damage buff. I think Bopp is giving good advice, but I went with the approach of gearing for the T3 run I am most interested in (FSC) then working on other sets to cover other damage types later accept for shields which I made 3 off early on to counter each of the non-normal damage types.
Its good, if you don't want better armor.
All of the Wolver line completely outclasses it and if anything I'd use Azure as a Costume. (I actually got it to 4*, but then Gave up at the sight of Shadow Lairs)
That's all you need to know.

Azure Guardian is in some sense the "default" armor, just because it is Cobalt. However, it is not actually general-purpose. It protects against only normal and piercing damage, and it protects against no statuses at all.
I recommend that you get two different pieces of armor that protect against two non-normal damage types and a couple of statuses. Probably the king of this approach, at least for swordsmen, is Skolver Coat with Divine Veil. It offers protection against all four damage types, protection against the four most important statuses, and two offensive bonuses.
I recommend that you get such a general-purpose armor set (by researching the wiki), and then get additional armor pieces to form specialized sets.
