Even with a great PC and graphics card I get very crappy frame rates, especially in FSC or the Ironclaw Munitions Factory.
I’ve tried running the game using 64-bit Java, which doesn’t help at all. I also tried various launch options, tweaking 32-bit Java to allow more RAM usage, including amounts ranging from 600-1500MB, which also did not help at all.
I am currently running the game in compatibility mode at 1280x800 resolution (widescreen monitor) with all graphics settings as low as possible. Vertical sync option only makes the problem worse.
I purchased a GTX 580, hoping to solve the FPS issues, but to no avail. I’m assuming the problem lies with the game itself.
I also have the issue that seems to be very common among Spiral Knights players, in which my screen freezes for 1-2 seconds every few minutes, which gets progressively worse the longer I play (especially over 30 min.). This issue is somewhat manageable by simply closing the game using the task manager, or restarting my computer. The crappy FPS issue however, is making all of the progression content in Spiral Knights nearly impossible for me to play, least of all enjoy.
Any tips, tweaks, or ideas would be much appreciated.
I currently play Sprial Knights through a Steam account.
The only anti-virus program that I use at the moment is AVG, and my system is very clean--no extra programs open while playing Spiral Knights, other than Steam. My video card drivers are up-to-date.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
AMD Athlon Duel Core Processor 5050e (2.60GHz)
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Its partly due to how the Java platform works, giving a few limitations on high-end hardware. For the most part, as long as you have a decent video card, your more limited by CPU for this game.
As a side note, the 580 is kind of wasted on a dual core Athlon. With all the sales coming up, I'd keep an eye out for Bulldozer or Sandy/IvyBridge upgrades, or catch last gen tech for dirt cheap. Frostbite will thank you for it.
