My friend(who hasn't played in a while) was trying to log in, and whenever he ran the game it would give the above error message. I don't know what to do, I suggested uninstalling and re-installing. Help!

He could buy CE if he could log in!!! And he has tried from multiple systems like his laptop, other laptop, other computer, etc.

You can buy CE directly off the site, unless hes on Steam.... thats a different animal. But in either case, have send an email to SK support page, or support@spiralknights.com and they should be able to work through options to get him online again.
Theres a soft limit on the number of accounts that can be made from a system. He either has to play from a new machine, or you can contact support and have them clear the machine to add another account. Or he could buy the cheapest CE package to move the account into "paid" status to have the sharing restrictions removed.
