Earlier today, one of my friends was telling me about Nick's usual "what's in development" and he was telling me the featured auction would be a good crown sink. I didn't know how to respond to this considering I'm not exactly sure how a crown sink works or helps spiral knights. Can someone explain this to me?

Crown sinks are things that

Crown sinks are things that take in crowns and increase their value. For example, when the UV gambling gremlins were released, the value of crowns went up, because people wanted crowns to roll UVs with.
Crown sinks are good because as the value of crowns increases relative to the value of CE, the crowns per CE will decrease, which means people will get their energy for less crowns.
If you noticed, when the elevator passes were introduced, the price of CE went up. That's because more crowns were being introduced to the system when there was no limit to the amount of levels a person could do daily with an elevator pass, and the value of crowns decreased relative to the value of CE. That's why CE prices are so much higher than they were before the elevator passes.
The same concept applies to CE or mats; the silver keys were CE sinks. Mats don't really have one... though some people say one should be introduced to increase the value of mats.

I think.. ***

Since there will be a need to have Cr's, and there are only a few ways to get them, people will need to either play (run/kill) more in order to get.
The Possible ways to get Cr's are simple:

- Running the Clockworks (killing creatures, opening boxes, the prize wheel), will imply people to play the game more.
- Winning in PvP Matches (BN, LD), imply people to play more.
- Selling/Trading (the Auction House{Items, anything that is not bound to you in your arsenal}, Trade to People), this is a more complex thing since it can vary, but it will imply also to do more or keep doing the same things (such as crafting more, trading(buying), running more)
[you can trade Cr's for CE/ CE for Cr's]

To be honest i dont really understand what is the problem in here, thought i dont like the Idea of SK messing with the AH.
[for that i just won't mess with it]

*I think it will just make players play more, or do more than normal. For the desire of more Cr's.

Crown sinks remove crowns

Crown sinks remove crowns from the economy. Without crown sinks the amount of crowns players control keeps rising, making CE cost more an more.

Yes.

Crown sinks are a really good thing for F2Ps, because, as noted above, removing crowns from the economy effectively lowers ce prices (in cr!), both by players buying more cr with their ce and not buying ce with their excess cr.

Mat sinks? go vendor your excess mats. Yes, the cr payout is ridiculously low, but why have 350 light shards and 600 ecto drops sitting on your inventory anyway?

Think of it this way: If

Think of it this way: If everyone had a million dollars, nobody would be rich. However, that one guy who doesn't have a million dollars sure would be poor.

Without crown sinks in the game, eventually anyone who played long enough would have millions of crowns, and anything worth buying (CE, and any 3* or higher item) would cost millions of crowns, because most of the customers buying it could afford to pay it.

But what of the new players who haven't been around grinding levels endlessly for months on end, and/or buying CE with cash? They're essentially shut out of the economy because they're the minority of non-millionaires.

Crown sinks are certain mechanics in the game, like the 10% and 2% cut in the auction house and energy market, or the 30% cut in Lockdown, that take money out of the hands of players and essentially burn it in a big pile. Ideally it would keep the total crown supply (which are continuously being created by players running in the clockworks) at a roughly constant level per player.

It's not.They are just

It's not.
They are just trying to make up for their [goofy] energy sinks.

If OOO releases top tier weapons in featured auctions this game is literally going to become whoever pays the most will be the strongest and nobody is going to play anymore.

This is a common miss-understanding.

The first one is, indeed a crown fountain, the others are not, they are crown transfers.

A crown fountain is any place in the game where crowns are generated and given to a player.

A crown transfer is any place in the game where crowns are taken from one player and given to another

A crown sink is any place in the game where crowns are removed from the game

I can think of only two crown fountains:
- running in the clockworks
- selling stuff to vendors. (That stuff, however, has to come directly or indirectly from the clockworks.)

In order for a crown sink to have an impact on the cr<->CE exchange rate, not only does it have to exist, but it has to be desirable enough to players who have CE for them to sell their CE to get the crowns to use the crown sink. For example, you can buy vials with crowns in the clockwork towns, but almost no one does and even fewer will sell CE to get it, so that crown sink has very little impact on anything. In PvP matches, 60cr out of the 200cr entry fee is sunk and quite a few people play it so it sinks quite a few crowns, but I suspect that almost everyone plays it on loose change, almost no one sells CE just so that they can play PvP. The accessory auctions, on the other hand, appeared to have a lot of people selling large amounts of CE in order to bid.

A lot of the comments are on

A lot of the comments are on the right track, so I'll summarize why this is a good thing for the benefit of the OP.

A crownsink removes crowns from the economy, causing currency deflation, meaning that each crown now has more inherent value (the opposite of inflation).

The most common use for excess crowns right now is buying CE. If there is a large demand for CE because people have huge pools of crowns and nothing to spend them on, sellers can charge a higher price, as the CE is more valuable than the crowns. This is happening right now due to the elevator pass. It's also why there is a general upward trend in CE prices--when people first start playing they need crowns for recipes and materials. Once they have those, they need CE for crafting and playing.

If there is a greater demand for crowns than CE, then the supply of CE being sold will increase. As sellers compete for buyers, they will be forced to lower the sell price in order to convert their CE to crowns. This caused a dip in CE prices when Punch was introduced, and it caused a decent drop near then end of the recent artificially rare item auction (CE went down to ~6000 cr per 100).

This makes the Featured Auction idea a Good Thing for those constantly complaining about CE prices, and how OOO should do something to "fix" a player-driven economy. This is their current solution. It takes advantage of those with a compulsion for shinies (the accessories, and I doubt that the rare weapons will be anything game-breaking--look at the shadow lair equipment) by driving them to value crowns more than CE. Wise players should watch the Featured Auctions for the end times, and buy CE when it reaches Very Short in order to take advantage of frantic bidding wars.

As stated before

They're mainly ways to avoid getting tons of crowns in the market at a time.

However, where are our mat sinks? ;~;
