I played Spiral Knights when it first came out. As soon as the game was getting started, I joined. I made it past Tier 2 and was working on getting 3/4 star items, then decided to take a break. It's been a long while since I've played. I downloaded Steam, and started playing it again for a little while.
I used to be able to log-in through facebook on the main site, and play the game when it launched. But, my previously-existing account and the Steam account didn't register as the same, so I couldn't get achievements based off of this one character (the reason I got Steam).

Anyways, today I decided to start playing again. Many things changed - the world, new maps, tons of new gear, new creatures. It had been a while and this is a constantly updating game. Good news, right?

Well, this is where the Steam problem comes into play. Ever since I got Steam, Spiral Knights - when started from the desktop - would log in to my Steam. At first, months ago, this was no problem. I'd just log into facebook from the open client and play normally. After my break, today, when I tried logging in through facebook using the Client, it wouldn't register. I am currently logged into the FB account, so obviously it is still active. So, I decide to play from the main site.
This is what frustrates me.
Every time I click on "Play", on the launch page or the tab, the browser just suddenly closes. I am using Mozilla. I switched over to Chrome, and attempted it - though, instead of closing, it said I did not have the latest Java (which I do, as I am able to play Spiral Knights using Steam). I was forced to create a new character through my Steam account just now to play with my friend.

I am just wondering why the internet would just close off whenever I attempt to load the client directly from the main page, or why I am unable to log-in to FB using the client through Steam. If anybody knows the answers to either of these, please tell me. I want to go back to my mid-level character. T_T

Steam includes an older copy

Steam includes an older copy of Java 6u25, so thats not the issue at hand.

Things that we do know:
- Webkit (Steam's portable browser) does NOT like Facebook connect. Its some kind of Javascript issue thats been going on since forever, and both parties have yet to do anything about it.

- Steam can identify itself as a web protocol to Windows, so any short cut containing the URL/UNC "steam://" will instruct it to launch the steam client. If you tell Steam to make a desktop shortcut, this how it'll always do it. If you login to the site using Steam login, this is also how it tells Windows to use Steam instead of the web launcher.

- If the browser is crashing while loading a java applet, the plugin is probably hosed or could be incompatible with a recent udpate. Best way to handle it is going into the system java control panel, on the general tab, under Temporary internet files, click the settings button, then delete files. This'll clear out the java cache. Next, uninstall java from Windows "Programs and Features". Open the FF, Ctrl+Shift+A to open the add-ons menu, then check to make sure the plugins were removed.

Then go to http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and manually download the installer for your OS. When FF starts up, it should indicate any problems with plugin compatibility.

Clear out your browser cache, restart FF and then try logging into the site again.

So...

If I follow your instructions, and try to launch the game from FF with my facebook connect, would it still force-close, or only let me play using steam? If so, then I might just have to uninstall both SK and Steam, then reinstall SK.

If you login with a regular,

If you login with a regular, segapass, or FBC account, the link goes to the launcher applet (whats looks like is crashing on you). If you login using Steam, the link changes steam://(some number) and launches the Steam client/game.

The hard part right now is trying to figure out whats wrong. Since the steam version is working, it means the problem can be either the game files are corrupted (in the java cache), the system java runtime/plugin is corrupted, or your browser is crashing while trying to handle the applet. Given chrome's error, the first two are most likely. Honestly theres no guarantee this will fix it, but we have to start someplace.

I think

I think it's working now. I uninstalled then downloaded Java, and tried logging in through facebook and starting the client from the website. It didn't shut down immediately, but I think it's trying to reinstall the game. Which means I'll have two copies of the game - the Steam, and the Official. D:

Thats how it always worked.

Thats how it always worked. And if you use the standalone installer, you get 3 copies. :P
