If you want a pure normal 5*
If you want a pure normal 5* shield, you can get an ancient plate for "free". Works nicely in gremlin areas, since they do all normal damage.
Health determines how much damage the shield can take before it breaks
The reason why most people dont use it is because resists work better than having more health.
