so my volcanic plate shield. the fire reststance. is it permanently on me or if the fire resistance only there when i am holding up my shield??
shield effect protection perm or only when shield is up?

Consider the shield a separate entity. It has its own defense and life that only works when you hold it. Doesnt affect your character's defense or resistances.

The way i see it, some enemies have attacks that imbue a status. If it hits you, then you can get that status. But for shields, it acts like another form of damage, which takes away a certain amount of your shield's health. Thats why trojan and vana clubs are so powerful, because hardly anyone uses shields that block stun
Shields work different than armor. They can only block incoming attacks and have no other affect on your defense.
The shields have a health category which says how much damage it can take before breaking. Those other stats only say if it has a bonus against those types it won't drain the health of the shield quite as fast.
So, for example, a owlite shield won't break as fast when hit with fire, shock, normal, or elemental type attacks. However, it will not shorten fire or shock status affects or reduce the amount of damage taken.
