If I buy the explorer's pack do I just automatically get it and the 2 week counter starts immediately and all the stuff appears in my inventory or do I get a redeem code? The reason for asking is because I want to buy one for a friend and not myself.

Yes, the 2 week counter starts immediately, the energy is added to your account and the three items are mailed to you and once you accept them they pop into your inventory. There is more information about it in the announcements section.
