It's alternate ACCOUNTS not characters. There's a huge difference there.

@trying, you said they opened up 2 copies of the client. does that mean you need to make a new account on a second client, and that the main has to be on at the same time? cause i made two accounts separately on the same client and then tried'em on separate clients and they still shared mist.

Two separate accounts, same computer, buy energy on one, the mist on the accounts on both will be separate. This lets people use the mist on the alt account to craft things for sale, while using their main account for playing. Look up 'energy' on the wiki.
3 possibilities:
They bought CE or an elevator pass with real money thus separating mist
They use 2 computers
They open 2 copies of the client
