Is split specialized defense good?

I noticed these sets have split special defense:

Radiant Silvermail: piercing and shadow
Divine Veil/Mantle: elemental and shadow
Dragon Scale Helm/Mail: piercing and elemental

Kinda curious, are any of these armors practical or would normal + 1 type of special defense be better?

general-purpose vs. specialized

The question in much of Spiral Knights arsenal planning is: Do you want a general-purpose loadout, or a specialized one? In my view, these split non-normal armors exist to make armor sets that protect against all four damage types, and hence are general-purpose.

For example, the most legendary general-purpose armor set is Divine Veil with Skolver Coat. It gives you all four damage protections, the three most important status protections, another status protection, and two offensive bonuses. (My secondary character plays with this and nothing else.)

On the other hand, if you are a more developed character, who has multiple armor sets for specialized situations, then you may never use a general-purpose set at all. (My main character doesn't.) Instead, you equip armor based on offensive bonuses, or based on piercing, elemental, or shadow damage, with the appropriate trinkets. It's quite an operation.

In Stratum 1, monsters do entirely normal damage, or close to it. As you go deeper into the Clockworks, monsters increasingly deal their preferred damage type (e.g., piercing for slimes). But even on Stratum 6, there is a lot of normal damage being done. So, whatever you do, you should always have some normal armor on.

The split gear isn't strictly

The split gear isn't strictly limited to combining for a general purpose set.

I personally use a virulisk/silvermail combo for Concrete Jungle since it gives bonuses against undead and slime, and has shadow/pierce/pierce/normal and poison protection. You can also pair it with Valkyrie or Dread Skelly for pierce/shadow/shadow/normal and poison, which might be preferred for shadow snarby (I don't personally do shadow lairs).

I also use my silvermail in my general-purpose set for when I'm jumping into a random party on a status-themed stratum. I pair it with a miracle hood to get shadow/pierce/elemental/normal. Bopp has already covered the more common general purpose set. I haven't seen any useful combination to make Dragon Scale into a general purpose set though.

Dragon scale + skolver

I use a dragon scale helm and a skolver coat (was originally planning to use helm for costume, stuck with it), and i found it's pretty decent: elemental/pierce/pierce/normal + fire and freeze, med sword and beast bonus. Not the best all purpose set (fiends do quite a number here) but it's decent. Also is not bad in lockdown, as it can take plenty of toothpick hits and survive DA's and brandishes (versus full skolver or split skolv/ vog)
