After a previous post earlier this week and considering my extremely terrible luck with recipes this week, I thought I may as well ask this question and get it out of the way.

So, I am a 3* gunner (all my stuff is 3*, but I don't remember the names of my weapons ^_^; ) and I have a Shadowtech Alchemer, Magnus, and Kilowatt Pulsar. I also have an antigua, but it was a temporary pierce weapon and was purchased more for PvP. (I also bought a Snarble Barb for giggles because I had left over tokens). I have been spending the past weeks, whenever I have time to play, to not only buy 4* recipes, but also to get some more variety in my arsenal, as well as try to get items that I probably want for FSC and whatnot when I get the T3 clearance.

I would really like to have all status weapon options (well most of them) and pretty much have as much weapon choices as I can. I've been looking for a freezing weapon and was just wondering how the Shivermist line would be (as more of a sidearm/situational weapon). I know I've heard it's really good for FSC, and I imagine the CC would be fantastic while I grind RJP.
There's a frost gun as well, but from seeing someone in one of my runs with it, I mixed feeling on it. It was nice for freezing the jellies, but they were almost always broken free a few seconds later. From what I've read it's more of a solo gun as well?

What about a fire status gun (or weapon)? Is the Pepperbox any good or would sticking with the firotech alchemer be better?
As well are there any other guns I should consider looking into? Any swords that might be good as "sidearms"? (I have the blitz recipe as an in case)

I wouldn't worry so much

I wouldn't worry so much about the fire status. It looks very powerful when you take a 2* firotech into tier 2 and see the fire ticks deal more than the actual shots, but it is not as great the farther you upgrade the fire gun. Eventually, the raw damage will get more and more powerful especially once you hit 4*. Fire damage or any status damage is based on depth / stratum / tier etc.

The Hail Driver / cryotech is definately more of a solo gun, and you shouldn't use it to freeze jellies (as you saw the one person do) because your shadowtech's extra damage will help more. The thing about Hail is that you have to learn how to use it unlike the other elemental alchemers or you will be upset about breaking freeze.

Pepperbox has low mobility and slower than normal movement speed while charging (as opposed to other gun charging movement speeds). So it hinders your survivability, while having a heavy burst charge attack. If you do not have all 4 weapon slots, I would suggest sticking with one elemental, pierce, and shadow gun.

Having a wide variety of guns is always fun - for example, you can switch your Storm to a Hail if you enter a shock-themed area, or to Nova Driver for extra raw damage.

If you want a nice sidearm, I hear that a vortex bomb with Polaris combo works well. Never tried it, though it is something to consider trying. Otherwise I do not know much about non-gun things.

I'm no expert on guns, so

I'm no expert on guns, so I'll let Rawrcake handle that. Swords, though, I know.

Good side-blades would include the Divine Avenger, Leviathan Blade, and Barbarous Thorn Blade (or Flourish).

Divine avenger is great when you're surrounded by enemies. It has a wide, powerful swing which can create a lot of room, really fast.

Leviathan is a utility knife which you can use to carve your way through a crowd if you need to, or do some burst damage. The charge is really useful, as well. It can spread out a huge crowd in a hurry.

Barbarous Thorn Blade holds the #1 spot, though, due to greavers and wolvers. All of my gunner friends are constantly complaining about these. Barbarous thorn blade has a wide swing identical to Divine Avenger, with a little less knockback, but it's much quicker. Surrounded by a group of greavers? Hit them, shield cancel, back up a step, and hit them again. They die *very* quickly.

BTB/FF easily, really good

BTB/FF easily, really good for cutting down grass, ideal for picking off healers and like Carthiah mentioned, amazing against greavers. If i could only pick one sword while having a shadow and elemental gun the sword would be BTB/FF for sure.

As a gunner, you might have the most problems with greavers so a BTB or FF might be the only actual logical sidearm a "pure" (most guns) gunner should get.

If you prefer the knockback on DA / Leviathan Blade's charge attack, then you should consider changing to a swordsman. Pure-ish gunners will prefer using their guns even in situations where packs of monsters are extremely close - you might not realize this if you take a Polaris with its not that desirable close-range bullets (though they are still viable, one will benefit a lot more from a different gun for close range). A pure-ish gunner will want to have an alchemer as well as a Polaris because the Polaris is not an all-around gun. It only shines where it shines.

so a piercing blade as your sidearm is probably the best choice - after getting a BTB I can say it only makes sense to bring along a BTB for haunted passages / fiend arenas etc. instead of attempting to take them down with a gun regardless of your gun damage bonuses etc. It is just due to the greaver mechanics being so sword-friendly.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the info!

Strangely enough, after reading the replies, I was trying to remember if I ever dealt with greavers. It just so happens that the new jelly stratums have a chance for fiends/greavers and lucky me I found myself alone with the greavers when we hit a three way fork. So, I'll be upgrading my Snarble Barb asap. :P

And the vortex/polaris combo actually sounds quite interesting. I'll have to be on the lookout for the vortex recipe.

Yeah. I have not personally

Yeah. I have not personally tried it. You can quickly transition into normal shots of a polaris from laying down the vortex bomb as well as the time it takes for a vortex bomb to begin after starting it to get ranged to allow the bullets to expand, it sounds like it might be interesting. Shock from either the Electron vortex or the Polaris can help cancel any unecessary knockback.

So shock cancelling knockback is actually positive in that situation though knockback might not be strong enough to bring enemies outside of the spinning vortex in the first place.

knockback on the vortex

large group of enemies stuck in the vortex = no KB
enemies get shocked (either by electron vortex or polaris etc) = no KB
however a small number of enemies stuck in the vortex will get thrown around randomly (and quite violently) if not shocked unless you chain vortexes such that monsters get sucked into the next vortex as the previous one explodes.
