An ability to hide all chat, either individually (like hiding guild, officer, and general chat along with the already existing /afk and some options for the trade chats) or to just hide ALL chat would help at times. To add to this:
-An example: /hideguild or /hideg for hiding guild chat or /hideall for everything. Using just /hide will bring up an auto response such as "use /hideg for guild, /afk for messages, etc."
-If a player is hiding all or a certain chat, thier player icon in friends list/guild member list will have some type of icon indicating mute to chat
-personal messages to the player will send an auto response as well as what chat they are bocking (Ex: "sorry, afk" user is blocking the following:"

I don't see anything wrong with being able to tune out guildmate natter or just enjoy a Spiral Knights session without getting nagged at.
The only thing I have a slight issue with is that I don't think that what they're blocking in particular needs to be stated, but other than that, why not? An impromptu Do Not Disturb-esque status wouldn't really cause any harm, so I can't see anything huge against not implementing it.

Chat tabs that hold different
Chat tabs that hold different chat types, and then one that holds "all" would be the end all solution. I believe the majority of other MMOs have them, most notably RuneScape and WoW.

Having two seperate GUIs for two different users on the same computer would be painful. I remember not having adverts on my RuneScape client several weeks after my membership ran out.
Or maybe you're just butthurt about the P2P crap?
That would be really useful for when I'm recording videos.
