For my 5* shield, I have two choices:
Barbarous Thorn Shield
Ironmight Plate Shield
The Barb shield gives a sword damage bonus, but the Ironmight shield has more Normal protection. So, what would be the better shield.
Which shield?

Swordsman, along with my Voltech Alche-something. I dont use me gun often, though, so i might switch it out for a Graviton bomb.

Swordsman = Barbarous Thorn
Swordsman = Barbarous Thorn Shield, from what I hear.
Bomber = dunno, prolly Ironmight because you get closer than gunners so you might have to worry about normal-causing or split normal piercing attacks rather than just pure piercing.
Gunner = Royal Jelly Shield, you will mostly be guarding pure piercing attacks, due to our play style.
If you don't like one or the other, don't worry. You can get either as any of the three, it does not really matter honestly even in shadow lairs.

I think you should get the ironmight plate shield. Perfect for swordsman. You know why? because:
1. Normal and piercing are the 2 things a swordman needs to watch out for. (well, mostly for pvp)
2. The ironmight has THE best normal defense in the game. (exept for Volcanic even though they have the same)
3. It also has REALLY good piercing defense.
4. It is SOOOOOO cool.

@1 Eh, I personally would be more worried about Shadow and Elemental attacks as a Swordsman, since those two sources often come from bullets. T3 Greavers, T3 Mech Knights, Devilites, T2/3 Kats, Howlitzers, Gun Puppies; the only long-range projectile piercers I can think of are Polyps. And Lockdown and Blastnetwork/bomberman ignores your equipped shield, so that's not going to help you in PvP currently.
@4 I dunno, I like the shadowy look. I'm attracted to dark things. :) But that's just me. xD
I guess the real question is, are you more defensive or offensive sword user? If you want more offense, you can't go wrong with the Barbarous Thorn Shield. And well, if you're defensive, Ironmight is great here.

D'oh, of course. Careless reading on my part--I should have figured that out.
Anyway, I'd say BTS, because a sword user should have that *anyway*. Then the plate can become a VPS, and be used for a distinct purpose rather than being redundant.
