A "cancel bid" option would be helpful. Your thoughts?

Sounds like a good idea, but i dont think people would like what i would do if this was implemented :3

1. bid a ridiculous amount of crowns on something.
Result : No one else bids on it

2. I come back, cancel my bid, and then bid a reasonable amount of crowns a few minutes before the bid ends.
Result : I win :D

While I do occasionally want my crowns back...

...I don't see how this would work unless they kept a record of every bidder on every single auction. If you canceled your bid, the auction would fall back on the previous bidder I suppose, but perhaps that bidder no longer has the crowns to bid on that item. Auctions don't really work like this, sadly.

@Schattenlag
I suppose the auctions could keep falling back if no one has money until it goes to no bid..

@Serell
There could be a limited time available to cancel the auction that gives a reasonable amount of time for someone else to bid on it.

Ok, then i stalk the item all day, bidding unreasonable prices, cancelling, and repeating until a few minutes before the bid ends and only bid a reasonable amount of crowns :3

I win thee bid :D

The way I see it

A bid on an auction is sort of like a contract between the buyer and seller. Once the potential buyer bids, he/she has put in a commitment to the seller - the seller knows that the item will be sold, and the bidder knows that he/she has bid. If the bidder cancels the bid, he/she is breaking this contract - the seller is no longer guaranteed a sale. In my opinion, the ability to cancel a bid and have it fall back to no bids is a violation of this contract system and an auction simply won't be the same.

Exactly. Placing an appeal

Exactly. Placing an appeal for a cancellation your bid on eBay, even for a good reason, puts a black mark against your name.
