Does it count as a projectile? Like, if I sent one of these out will it cause every mecha knight in a
hundred yard radius to shield?

Nope
The Dark Retribution does not get considered as individual projectiles.
Running it in the Rise or Fall Mission with the arena at the end with approx. 12 mechas doesnt lead to any unwanted shielding.
Test it out yourself there, Fun and fast way to finish it up.
