SK is known for its pop-culture references. No wonder there are lots of them in missions as well.
Below, you can find the ones that I've identified at first glance (I don't mention obvious idioms like Pierce of Cake or In Cold Blood). I'm sure there are more though.

3-2 Shadow of the Beast
Reference to well known (but not so good IMO) computer game Shadow of the Beast.

4-3 Elemental My Dear
Reference to quote of famous Sherlock Holmes: Elementary, my dear Watson.

5-1 The Shadow Knows
Reference to the Shadow.

5-1 Work for Idle Hands
Reference to the idiom: The devil finds work for idle hands.

5-2 Time Enough at Last
Reference to the Twilight Zone episode called Time Enough at Last.

6-1 Axes of Evil
Reference to term used by George W. Bush to describe countries that he accused of helping terrorism.

8-2 The Great Escape
Reference to the film The Great Escape.

9-1 An Occurrence at Owlite Keep
Reference to the Twilight Zone episode called An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.

9-2 Eye of the Needle
Reference to the book Eye of the Needle.

9-2 Alone in the Dark
Reference to one of the best game of my childhood - famous Alone in the Dark.

I'm still a big fan of "Ashes to Ash Tails", though that's a level name, not a mission name.

Well I guess in this game

Well I guess in this game there hasn't ever been tons of "references to" comments.

A lot of things seem like "references" but they are not.

For example, Magic Cloak armor in Spiral Knights. Despite its name, it is not at all a reference to Harry Potter's invisibility cape.

Do you see what I am saying? Some things are more vague. It has to be very obvious to be a reference.

All examples posted by me are THAT obvious.

You can't deny that An Occurrence at Owlite Keep is reference to An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge or Time Enough at Last is reference to Twilight Zone episode - especially given the resemblance of Henry Bemis and Edger.

EDIT:
And however I don't see how Magic Cloak could be reference to Potter's Cape, it's fairy obvious that, for example, Nameless Poncho is reference to poncho worn by Clint Eastwood (The Man with No Name) in "A Fistful of Dollars" and Callahan is reference to inspector Harry Callahan from "Dirty Harry". I'm interested in such obvious references.

I love it how supposed fans of Sherlock Holmes complain about the movie with Robert Downey Jr. when it is, in fact closer to the books than other adaptions. Holmes boxed and Watson was a former soldier and not short and fat at all. Maybe more people should read...

Besides all that, there's also an obvious Back to the Future reference in the Voltedge description. How could anyone possibly not know the significance of 1.21 gigawatts?

I was mainly referring to

I was mainly referring to "Alone in the Dark" being a reference to some random game.

I believe I have said something some time in my life along the lines of being "alone in the dark" without even being aware of the existance of that video game.

Also, "the great escape".

first, ask yourself if the mission itself has anything to do with the referenced movie or video game.

If it does and it isn't just because the titles are similar, then yes it is a reference and you prove me wrong. If not, it is not a reference.

@Ubernerd There was a thread

@Ubernerd
There was a thread about items references some time ago, and of course Voltedge has been mentioned there as one of those most obvious references.
This thread (as topic suggests) is about mission references.

@Not-The-Rawrcake
The Great Escape being about escaping from gremlin prison has similar theme (as far as it can be similar in case of unsophisticated hack&slash MMO) to The Great Escape. Beside it's one of the most significant films in the history and if you call something The Great Escape it's sort of automatic reference. It's like naming a mission Gone with the Wind or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Also I think that you don't really need much more then a title to create a reference, for example the mission An Occurrence at Owlite Keep hasn't much in common with the plot of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge - it's just a sort pun.

I was mainly referring to "Alone in the Dark" being a reference to some random game.
Alone in the Dark... random game? Blasphemy!!!

And achievement World of Moorcraft is not reference to World of Warcraft. Not at all. I believe I have said something some time in my life along the lines of this world being "world of warcraft" without even being aware of the existance of that MMO. Derp

Actually, Rawr..

Alone in the Dark isn't "some random game". It was a HUGE deal in its day and was one of the first wildly successful horror-survival games. They even tried to reboot it recently (which was a miserable failure because they gutted what made it good, sigh).

@Maeko Actually if you check

@Maeko
Actually if you check the link it says Holmes said this phrase, for example in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, the first Sherlock Holmes sound film. Although it's not by Conan Doyle, it's still Sherlock Holmes.

Beside pop-culture is known for such inaccuracy - most people know Sherlock Holmes for this quote, even though this phrase is never uttered by Holmes in any of the sixty Holmes stories written by Conan Doyle. Likewise most people imagine Cleopatra as Egyptian even though she was Greek and looked like typical Ancient Greek Female with Ancient Greek haircut and whatnot.

BTW, nice finding. It makes this link much more sensible... at least the part with gremlins being policemen ;-)
