Hello Spiral Knights Forum,

I have a couple questions regarding Spiral Knights and data usage.

In a short time from now I'm going to be going on an extended trip in the mountains, not a vacation, and I'm looking into getting an internet connection up there so I can try and play some Spiral Knights while I'm up there on my laptop.

I already understand that it will probably be impossible for me to get a connection that would be nearly as stable and fast as my home connection, but I want to try and stay connected anyway if I can, even if its just a few low-tier PvE runs by myself.

So I'm curious as to the amount of data usage that Spiral Knights uses up while it's connected through Steam and if something like a 5-gig a month plan would be sufficient if I planned on playing almost every day.

I also am curious if there is any way to reduce the amount of data usage Spiral Knights takes up, in the case that it takes up more than I expect it does.

Any other random information pertaining to this subject line is welcome as well, and I look forward to some of your responses.

Thanks for your time,
Isaak

I don't know how much data it would take but I'm pretty sure 5 gigs is not enough. You would probably have some pretty bad lag and have to avoid PvP. You also need to take into account that the game is updated pretty much every month.

You can find out before your

You can find out before your trip, with a tool called WireShark (continuation of the old tool called Ethereal).

It's a free network protocol analyzer, open source, with binaries for Windows and OSX. You can download it from here:
http://www.wireshark.org/download.html

For Linux you can probably find WireShark already included in your distribution, so just install it from there.
http://www.wireshark.org/download.html#thirdparty

From what I've read Spiral Knights uses UDP; so put a filter on that. Then launch SK and observe the hosts it connects to, and filter on those. After playing you can use the Statistics menu to find out how much data were sent (e.g packet lengths).

My gut feeling is the same as Trying - it's not going to be enough, even if all you do for that month is just hang around in Haven and rage craft your mist away.

Awesome!

Thanks Evilnut, that is a pretty awesome program!

It took me a little while to figure it out, but I got it working and tracking my packets as I played for 20 minutes. I also had Steam running, and two webpages open in the background (This form topic and a WireShark help document.)

I spawned in the arcade, went down into a gate and played the first depth, had to backtrack once, and did a danger room. Then I went back up into the arcade, and then went into the Haven Square where I checked out the auction house and then crafted one item. (Just a cheap one to test.) Then I went to the marketplace and sold that item to a vendor and then logged out.

Roughly all of that only ran me about 10 megabytes of data for about 20 minutes of play. That doesn't seem too bad, but since I did limit it to tracking UDP like you recommended, I don't know how much other data was being transferred by Steam, or the two webpages.

I'll keep playing with this program, thanks sooo much for telling me about it!

Glad I could help

Open source community is awesome... Ethereal/WireShark is a very useful tool. :)
