I was wondering this too, but

I was wondering this too, but the other guys just tell me to get the autogun instead. So, far, not the best thing.

yes, it's great

Yes, Blaster/Valiance is good. Among normal guns, it is perhaps the easiest one to use effectively. Your alternative is to get an elemental gun as a sidearm. I describe why in the Sidearms section of my Sword Guide.

From what I can tell...

Yes it works great as a sidearm for keeping enemies away and general utility of shooting switches and such.
VERY EASY to use. But keep in mind that as a normal type gun it wont dish any heavy damage(still fairly good damage though) towards any specific enemy types or deal status like the commonly used alchemers and elemental pulsars. However those requires practice to use properly since the alchemers have the whole bouncing bullet mechanic while pulsars cause explosions everywhere potentially causing harm to party members by blocking their sight or knocking enemies into them.

@Trobolta
The only point of having an autogun sidearm is running FSC where you use it for trojans and Vanaduke. Outside FSC you wont find many piercing weak enemies who don't dodge and 2/3 turret types resist piercing.

Valiance is nice if you care

Valiance is nice if you care more about the utility of the knockback at all ranges and don't care at all about the damage. It's really nice for bombers because the knockback is fairly strong and easily predictable so one can utilise it to shaping up mobs but if you are looking for a turret destoyer then Polaris/Supernova are the ways to go.
