So I'm thinking about doing my first SL and I was wondering what to expect there. What should I equip to defend against and attack?

To learn about any given Shadow Lair, read the wiki article "Shadow Lair". It tells you about the monsters and gives succinct advice on what armor and weapons to bring.
After that, you can view video of people doing any given Shadow Lair on YouTube.
Edit: Also, search this forum to find threads about equipping for Shadow Lairs. They come up maybe once per week.

The people who do Shadow Lairs routinely probably have the Unknown Passage down. But, as someone who's done them only a few times, I find the Unknown Passage at least as hard as the other levels in a Shadow Lair. It's basically a lot of tight fights (multiple monsters in small rooms with limited maneuvering), with Swarm spawn points that make you move at half speed all the time, much like a stun. So you need people to suppress the spawn points, while others kill and kill. Someone makes a mistake, and it starts going downhill quickly. But it's fun. You should try it.

Just keep moving, and dodge those slow moving bullets. Otherwise, you should be fine since you should know all the attack patterns of the monsters in there. I like using a combuster charge, but you should be fine with anything.
