Buckler all the way

The Defender gets a very minor defensive bonus to piercing and normal, which really isn't worth it when you consider it only applies when you're using the shield. It can be upgraded to a Heater Shield, which has normal and elemental protection and freeze resistance, but this isn't really a good choice in general, since Grey Owlite has the same protection whilst exchanging freeze for shock and fire resistance (both of which are generally more dangerous statuses).
The Buckler gives you a damage bonus, allowing you to kill stuff faster if you use swords and keeping you safer by ensuring your enemies die more quickly. It starts off as 'low', but the 5* version Barbarous Thorn Shield has a Medium bonus, meaning you can max out your sword damage without using any trinkets.

I'd get the Buckler, as someone who uses swords on a regular basis.

(Of course, if you're going for guns or bombs, I would go for Swiftstrike for the former (in t2 at least) and a good defensive shield (Plate or Owlite) for the latter - despite what the description of Swiftstrike says, the ASI High boost applies to all weapons, not just melee. Unfortunately, neither gunners nor bombers get offensive bonus shields that have 5* versions, and bombers don't get offensive shields at all.)

If you use swords at all then

If you use swords at all then buckler is the obvious choice. If you're a gunner or bomber though, the bonus would just go to waste... and Aegis does look pretty smexy... your choice in the end, either would serve you well enough really.

Aegis if you don't use swords

Aegis if you don't use swords and Swiftstrike if you use swords and/or guns.

Swordmen

I prefer the bristling buckler if u are a Swordmen. But if u prefer to have a balanced loadout, then take the defender, it's great for hybrids.

Sword = Barbarous Thorn

Sword = Barbarous Thorn Shield
Gunner = Swiftstrike Buckler
Bomber = Depends what you want to do later on
Hybrid = Any good status defense shields (GoS or CoA)

Unless you are really

Unless you are really considering not touching a sword at all playing this game, bristling buckler is better. And as the game goes on, you might want to try out different playstyles just to keep things interesting. The higher defence aegis has is honestly not that much better than a bts.
